An appropriately slender long slot screwdriver might serve the purpose. You need that little widening on the end as a scoop. I have a MM freehand, which is especially nice for its vulcanite stem; it's natural and pleasantly bristly in the hand. I think the Czech tool scoop and handle also reach to the bottom. These are tall and deep and perfect if you enjoy some of the dry burley single leaf, like Five Brothers or Tabac-Manil Semois. The tall bowl keeps it from burning too fast and prolongs the smoke with its depth.

Golf tees, natural finish, 3"-3.25" length.
Readily available tamper + pick, & you don't have to get all fiddly with Czech tools, pipe nails, butter knives, screwdrivers, pencils, etc.
Easily reaches the depth of MM Generals.
They are one of the cheapest pipe tools, & like the MM Cobs, there will be no weeping, & gnashing of teeth if you lose or break one.

Well here's mine. Picked up on a local South African auction site. I've no idea how it reached these shores, but was unsmoked when I bought it. It has a black plastic stem with MM logo(?), hardwood bottom and yellow metal band. It also appears to have what I believe to be a real cob shank, judging by the texture and is lacquered.
I've not seen another like it in all my browsing on the web, so any further information which could be provided by the cob aficionados would be most welcome.

I believe that is an old MM pipe. I know I read that they've used stickers on the bottom of their pipes since the 1970s so to have one where it's engraved on the bottom would make me believe it's far older.
