Purchased the Diplomat 5th Avenue Corn Cob Pipe straight from their website and according to the description it comes with a “genuine hardwood insert”.

The pipe I received came with these lines on the stem/shank and while they do not affect the whole pipe smoking experience they are a bloody eye sore and I hate looking at this pipe.

I have two questions:

1). What kind of “genuine wood inserts” do they use? Name of the wood please.

2). How do I get rid of this line as I feel like stomping on this pipe and ordering a new one?

3). If a rep from MM is reading this please offer pipes with discolouration and visual imperfections at a discount.

1) Maple IIRC.
2) That's normal.
3) Most of their pipes appear that way.

😢😤🥺🤬 LOL sorry but I just had too. Thank you for your reply @Chasing Embers

Update: MM offered me the chance to return it but I’m going to beat the hell outta this pipe and smoke it all day! I will however purchase another one or two of the same kind hopefully without any marks on the stem. Don’t get me wrong the MM pipes are phenomenal and they take abuse really well. I used to smoke my Mark Twain MM CC pipe several times a day without any issue. You can’t do that with briar pipes. They need a rest and if you only own briars and are a casual smoker you need to have at least 7 in your daily rotation, whereas with CC you can smoke that pipe several times a day! I’m not putting down MM in any way shape or form - on the contrary they kick serious arse!

Some of my MM pipes too, for example some Cobbler, General, and Diplomat, but they seem superficial, and I don't give them too much importance. I don't think you should worry about it.

You’re absolutely right @JOHN72 thank you for taking the time to reply to my humble thread. Cheers, mate!

Back when I started, 10 yrs ago, I bought a MM Legend at the corner drug store. I smoked it every day, all day for about 2 weeks. It took me a week to discover the filter that was inside. Surprise!
It took me a month to learn not to inhale, and that there was an entire THING called pipe smoking.
Despite going through my learning process and the abuse of a beginner, I still smoke this cob regularly.

MM pipes were born for abuse. I like them more than any briar pipes. Tobacco tastes the same as in a $5000 Dunhill. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Snobs will be snobs and will tell you otherwise. Thank you for your reply! 🙏

It’s a corn cob and an inexpensive wooden stem. I wouldn’t expect too much on the cosmetics side of things, especially given the price.

Heck, give the stem a wash with stain or dye if the line is too bothersome.

I've got one that split in a few places. Only one that's ever done that and I smoke quite a few cobs. It's all sealed up now with cake but I wish they sold them separately. Just a yard cob so I'm not too concerned. You can see the splits in the picture.20241101_185431.jpg

The Diplomat/5th Avenue and Great Dane have been my go to MM for years. They are the perfect size and shape in my opinion.
I believe they discontinued the Great Dane due to complaints about them smoking hot, burning out on the sides, and the extra work needed to make them.
The GD was just a Diplomat with an hourglass bowl. It's been my daily cob for years.
