I bought a shire last week and smoked it once this weekend just to try it out. My first cob. I'm just not really going to like cob smoking, and this one is way too large a pipe for me anyway.
If someone wants to paypal me $10, I'll drop it in a small priority box (which will cost me $6 of the $10) and mail it off to you. Only smoked once. If interested, just PM me and I'll give you my paypal email.

I've found the bowl to be too bulky for my tastes. I like the acorn shape, I just wanted it to be smaller. But even the "Dwarf" has the same diameter chamber, so I'm guessing that while its shorter, its not actually much smaller. I thought I would fill two gaps in my collection, but I still find myself in need of a corncob that speaks to me, and a churchwarden that fits my aesthetic (Wooden stem, no "fishtail" bit, etc.) I might just get a bag of "smokeable seconds" from MM, but I know I'd never get around to smoking all ten of them.

I don't mean to hijack your thread here but I'm too curious.
seacaptain, how come you don't like to smoke a cob? I'm asking because I'm thinking of buying one for myself.

I don't find the bowl size to be anything but perfect. I have a lot of cobs because I like them for how they smoke and how affordable they are.

Once I had my hands on "The Shire" I realized that I had the best quality corn cob pipe I've ever owned.

I'm sure the other cobbits are quite nice too, but I like this one for its size and shape. The stem and bowl of this pipe is, even though "are" sounds better, exceptional.

The bowl is way too big for my tastes. All my other pipes are about half that size. I don't smoke a lot and having a bowl with an hour smoke is just to much. I didn't care for the plastic stem, or the draw either. Maybe a smaller cob would work better for me, but since a have a few nice briars already, I don't see the point.

I have the Shire, Elf and Wizard. If you think the shires bowl is to big the ELF's and Wizards are larger. Let me tell you this, any of the three makes a good flake pipe. These are good 45 min smokes.

Oh, I don't mean to imply that the pipe is flawed in any way, and at that price I don't consider it a loss. Just not for me. They're 'trying' to be churchwardens, but the typical churchwarden seems to have a smaller bowl.

That's my take also. The pipe isn't flawed or bad, it's just not for me. I have to admit, that acorn shape does look pretty cool.

The next thing is to try a Country Gent with a warden stem I have one it smokes very well bit I think I prefer the Cobbits. Also look at some of the specs on some.of the Briar church wardens the bowl size isn't that much larger.

That's one of the reasons I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet! I've been looking at clay, too--a new area to me. And then there's my Peterson Belgique--a very small briar that I've been thinking of swapping the stem out on for a churchwarden conversion. It's similar to a cutty, so it's the right shape for the job.

If you are looking at a clay check out the Meerschaums. I am not able to afford a briar or Meerschaum Church Warden my Cobbits will work fine for me. I just priced a Peterson they started at $120.00. Hope you can find the Warden you like.

Well I got lucky on that Peterson. It was $55, including shipping from the UK. So if I ever get around to replacing the stem, It'll come in pretty cheap for a churchwarden. I'll post some pics on the board If it happens!
