Thanks guys. It was not my intention to garner sympathy with this post, but I appreciate your time in reading this, as well as some of your comments. I guess there is a cost associated with everything, including pipe smoking. For those of you under similar circumstance, having lost a job, I can only hope the economy swings around, but I don't see this happening any time soon. The middle class here in my neck of the woods, just outside NYC, has dropped significantly, with many just living paycheck to paycheck. So the loss of a job can trigger panic, despite the safety net of unemployment. The flip side is that there is more opportunity job-wise here, and something should turn up hopefully sooner rather than later. Sorry to bring anyone down with this post. It was not my intention. I wish you all happy smoking. Now, where did I put my Latakia...

It still comes out cheaper than hair and nails . I have a set budget for my smoking and pipe buying . So I have to plan ahead and postpone some major purchases . It can be very hard when ones income drops and ones obligations do not . Hang in there .

That is sad :(. When my pipe tool broke and I went looking for a replacement - finally deciding on a Dunhill one all I had to do was point my wife to the site where it is, hinting that it would make a great gift for me. :)

Kashmir,

I feel your pain...My wife and I look at spending money differently...She like to pay the bills, I like to buy pipes and tobacco...When I want a new pipe, she says...You got 30, why do you need a new one...or...you have like 10 pounds of tobacco, why do you need more. To tell you the truth...I just DO. I really have to put my hobby on the back burner until we get caught up on our bills, car payments, house payments...I really don't want to be homeless carrying around a suitcase of pipes and tobacco...
But Fathers day is comming up and my local B&M is having a big sale...on Savanilli's and I've been looking at the 320 EX...hopefully I can pick one up.
But it's not all that bad having a wife that looks after our family...

From Tommy:
My wife and I have an arrangement that's been working for many years.
We both have seperate incomes and maintain seperate checking accounts.

I pay all the bills out of mine and she buys all the groceries, household items and gifts for the family out of hers.
I have no idea what she has left or what she spends it on...nor could I care less.
She has no idea what I have left or what I spend it on...nor could she care less.
My wife and I have a very similar arrangement. Almost the exact same.
But yes, it is wonderful.

Like yours, my wife spends a ton on bags/purses. However, she doesn't say a word to me about smoking. I smoke my pipes in the house whenever I want and she's totally cool with it. She prefers the pipes over the cigars. In fact she told me she would rather me smoke pipes any time rather than cigars. On that end, I'm pretty happy. And the fact that we have separate bank accounts keeps her from coplaining when I spend anything on pipes. Pretty good deal. She is my fourth though. I don't waste a lot of time on one woman. If she bitches too much, I can always find another one.

I hate it for you.
Me and the wife have been married for almost 12 years. She likes my hobby. We pay our bills, put money back for a rainy day and what ever is left we spend how we see fit. I remember back in the day when I was single, I would test the ladies on how they felt about smoking.....I would fire up a cigar or pipe and see what kind of reaction I would get. The least negative response and I was turning the car around and dropping them back off at their house. I went thru a lot of women, but it was the best way I knew how to weed out the bad ones.
I thank GOD above everyday for blessing me with a good women. One a side note, my wife will drop by my local B&M if she knows I'm there and will drop off a bottle of port or somwthing for me and the guys. She's one of the few women truly welcome in the shop, as they know she's not a nag with wacked out agendas.

Update: wife wants me to sell some of my pipes on Ebay to cover the bills. Which ones to chose that's the question...What's the old adage? Adapt, migrate or die...hmmmmmmmm

Obviously, when times are tight we have to adjust. I know your wife isn't getting a lot of sympathy, but some people are not at their best when things are bad and there's no sign of improvement. I've got a friend whose marriage disintegrated when he was unemployed. Car repo'd, the whole bit. She left him, went back to Alberta. But then he got work again, has been employed for years now, has a new wife and everything's humming along for him. Hard to see the forest for the trees, I guess.
Look at the bright side: at least you're in the States. If you were Canadian, $65 would only get you two tins of tobacco.

I was lucky to marry a woman that puts up with my purchases. Of course I also sell estates on the side and have done well at time.

I've made several purchases of things for her with some of the profits and that helps keep her calm.
She has also been very easy going with my purchasing tools and setting up my shop for making pipe related items including briar for pipe making.
We stand behind each other in our hobbies, that helps a lot.
