By the time I buy or retrofit an acrylic stem on my MM cobs, they aren't disposable pipes to me anymore. I treat them right. And apparently they treat me right in return.

I just drilled out four MM Legends this week and fitted them out with hardwood plug bottoms. It took about twenty minutes and they smoke well from the start, no raw stem burn at the end of the bowl.

I mean, that is a lot more work than I want to put into a pipe. Unless I'm just making my own pipe. To each their own
I used to tinker a lot with my cobs. Anymore I just figure the first two smokes or so suck. After that I'll put a little honey in the bottom or, if I'm feeling lazy, just spit in the bottom, then sprinkle some ash on top. Then, just smoke as usual except that after each bowl is spent I cover with my thumb and shake the ash before I dump for a while. The bottom builds up a cake around that shank pretty quickly and I have to trim it a little as I ream before long at all. It's not rocket surgery. ;)

Depends what you define as ‘work’, I guess. Takes me less than 5 minutes to clean up the shank - if needed. The Forever Stem is used on multiple pipes & never wears out.

My unfinished cobs - I particularly like the Country Gentleman model - smoke cool & dry and provides a hassle free, excellent smoke.
I have plenty of briars, but often find myself grabbing a cob. They’re so easy.
