Aquadoc, my advice is to forget dogma, smoke your pipe as often as you like and let your tastebuds be your guide.
Within the last 2 weeks I had a peterson system pipe come in. I smoked it 5 days straight and only put it aside because I felt I should, not because the smoking experience suffered. The sump smelled like wet pipes tend to, but none of that translated to the smoke.
A poster on this board had a thread a few years back about a Peterson pipe in which he smoked 12 bowls per day, 5 days per week. His only complaint was an occasional gurgle.
A gent on another forum posted about his experience testing the "rotation" theory. He bought a new Savinelli author and smoked it exclusively all day, every day for months. At the end he said both the pipe and his smoking enjoyment were unchanged.
The take away, briar is up to the task. It won't take you long to decide if the pipe tastes fine to you with repeated smoking and you'll have your answer.
