I've been thinking of getting a mini meerschaum pipe for a "take along" pipe. I currently use a MM Legend for that, most generally but thought one of these little meers might be a nice change. I figure they are about the same size, capacity wise, and probably smoke similarly. But I'd like input from anyone that actually has experience with them.

Do you mean a mini Missouri Meerschaum or a small meerschaum pipe? I actually have both. The draft hole of the MM mini sits WAY above the floor of a very small bowl. I've never actually tried to smoke it, as it looks like more trouble than it's worth. However, I imagine it could be made to work.

I've known guys that smoked small meerschaums and they smoke just fine, and I think small pipes are cool. 'Course, they didn't get them at the tobacco store. The two caveats I would mention is, they don't come with cases, so you might want a pipe bag or pouch to keep it from getting all dinged up, and also, I would make sure my inspection sticker was current and my tailights worked.

Thanks for the input. I saw a couple on the 'bay that come with cases.

I think I have found a solution, a temporary one at least. I picked this up in a lot a while back and forgot about it.

It's a Pioneer block meerschaum. Finished the resto yesterday, before I got called that my grandson broke his arm; he's 5. Been at the hospital pretty much since 6 pm and will be here a while today.

Thank you. He just came out of recovery about an hour ago. The doctor said it went well and that he should get to go home this afternoon or early evening.

Thanks, Carl. They (kids) seem to do better and rebound faster than us (adults) really! LOL
Both of those are nice meers; I really like the carved one!

Greg that African Meer is ideal for keeping in a pocket for smoking. African meer is more dense and less prone to breakage versus its Turkish counterpart.

I have a Barling African meer and its a sturdy one.

I think your solution is a good one. I also have one of the tiny meers and it works, but it does sort of look like I'm smoking something other than tobacco. Of course, that would actually get me into LESS trouble around here!
Glad to hear the grandson is doing better. Kids do seem to recover quickly.

Thanks Greg, ya that larger Meer is AWESOME! It smokes so cool, it was marked as a 1940 somthing at an antique store here in Georgia. But I'd have figured it would have a bone tennon instead of plastic. So Anyway only paid 40 dollars for it, and it smokes sweet and cool. Love that thing! The little one is... meh. @Brewshooter that little meer looks gets some stares when im in the truck lighting it lol.

Try one like this I use when fishing as it is snug and comes in a case:

You have to search around on etsy but they do show up quite frequently and at under 5" long they are just perfect.

I don't own a Meerschaum because I don't want to open a whole new pandora's box of PAD, but

on the question, I think taking along a better (pricier) pipe is a fair risk. It depends where you

are taking it. A job site that involves a lot of moving around, and a lot of people you don't know,

you might be wise to stick with the cob. But if you have a set routine and some control of your

surroundings, and tend to keep pretty good track of your stuff, I'd say go for it. Most of us carry

cameras, phones, tablets and such items of value, and manage to get them home. I wouldn't take

along my three or four pricier pipes, or special gift pipes, but why not make your smokes away from

home as upscale as you can? The Peterson looks like a fine solution to your question, too. Nice pipe.

Thanks, Jason; I was thinking they were a little "tougher".
I am planning on using it on vacation, at outdoor functions/get togethers, things along those lines. And I'll likely carry it in my "belt bag" (man's fanny pack lol) along with my other tools: lighter, pipe tool, etc.
Thanks, Brew; it's a relief that it wasn't any worse than it was with my grandson.
