In the angst of my youth I filled trees with toilet paper, peppered homes with eggs, pissed in mailboxes, but never cut down a tree.. that would have been too much like work. That aside humans have been de-evolving since the inception of the Television. Don't fret my friends the populace will soon be connected to the hive mind and Henry will keep the kids from doing stupid shit. 
Interestingly, a second person was just arrested for this - a 60 year old local man. The plot thickens!
My conspiratorial mind wonders if the 16 year old was just hired muscle, and the 60 year old some local farmer sick to death of tourists traipsing through his property or some such curmudgeonly harrumphing.
