Dude, you had it good, elpfeife. I was assigned to the Presidio the week before Ord closed. It was an amazing time in my life. There really isn't any other place like Monterey/Carmel.
I spent 16 months at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey and concur -- there really isn't any other place like Monterey, CA! When I separated from the Marines in 2004 I moved back for a few years before moving on to Virginia. To this day it's on my "if I win the jackpot I'm moving to ____" list. Slice of heaven.
