Hello:
I'm new to the forums here and to pipe smoking in general. Since I'm just beginning, I hoped to get some advice regarding a few tobaccos with which to start.
Now, no offense to cigarette smokers, but I have a terrible time with cigarette smoke: can't tolerate the smell and it seems to really irritate my nasal passages and throat. Pipe smoke, on the other hand, seems to have little effect on me (in terms of irritation) and I rather enjoy the smell (reminds me of my grandfather and his Half and Half).
Now, I understand that if I am especially irritated by cig. smoke that I may not be able to handle pipe smoke either, unless it's from afar. But I'd really like to find out, if for nothing else than to just sate my curiosity about it.
So, my question is, are there any particularly mild pipe tobaccos that are recommended for people who are irritated/troubled by cigarettes? I suppose I am looking for as mild and pure a tobacco (with as few additives as possible).
Any and all recommendations for tobacco are welcome.
Thanks and all the best,
Michael

First off, try smoking your grandfather's half in half if you liked the smell! Secondly your going to get a different anwser for everyone who replies, it is to personal of an issue. Personally I will recommend captain black for beginners, the smell is just wonderful but you will probably not taste the flavor, this is going to be true for about any aromatic, once you learn to sip really slow and you know what your looking for this is flavor there though. Also there are a lot of gohst stories about humectant in aromatics. That is a scary word but that just means a device used to retain moister. It's usually an alcohol/surcharge base and it's in almost ever food you have ever ate with a preservative or artificial sweetener and is completely harmless.
Now my true advice would be go find a local shop! Someone there will let you sniff around and see what you like, and should even let you sample different blends so you can see what a balken, English, va per, virgina, Latika and everything else is because until you have tried it all you will never know what you like!

Welcome to the club!
Captain Black is certainly mild. The old codger blends like half n half, or prince albert are also very mild and biteless, but burley blends remind many smokers of cigarettes. YMMV, but all three of those are worth a shot and don't cost much to try.
Alternatively, the best place to start would indeed be the local tobacconist. Take your pipe and ask if you can try a sample of tobaccos that smell good.
Also, many pipers swear by Frog Morton, which is a very mild blend that also has some complexity to it and isn't overly sweet or perfumed.
Good luck!

My .02: skip the drug store blends and get some Angler's Dream from pipesandcigars.com
You'll then skip the chemicals that are probably causing cigarette smoke to irritate you.

C&D Haunted Bookstore. No, wait a while until you try that one. Even experienced pipe smokers have trouble with that blend. I enjoy it. There are other blends that people here recommend that have me stumbling around, from the nicotine.

I'd suggest an Oriental. The taste is slightly sweet but not sugary. McClelland's 2045 is a good bulk tobacco that fits the bill.

I'd suggest you call Uhles, Boswells, Milan Tobacconists, LJ Peretti, or VTpipes and pose your question to them, asking for their recommendations. Look up reviews of their pipe tobaccos on tobaccoreviews.com & see what might sound good to you. These folks are old-time tobacconists who should be able to offer better opinion than amateurs like me!

I am also a new smoker that dislikes cigarette smoke. Joshwolftree mentions Lane Ltd 1Q, and I agree, I found it mild and pleasant. I also found a tobacco by McClelland Tobacco Corp. named Holiday Spirit 2012 edition, and I find it mild and flavorful. I've also purchassed but haven't tried yet, Frog Morton and Dunhill Early Morning Pipe.
The Outwest Tobacco Shop let me enjoy the aromas and pick out ones I wanted to try. Many were available in one oz. trial packages.
