About a day or two ago I got a painful sore on my gum line. My dad thinks it may be what he calls a "smoke sore". It also could be an abscess. Either way he said to lay off the pipe for a bit. As much as I don't want to, I'm doing what he says. Smoking isn't very pleasant with this sore.

That's too bad. I'm not a Doctor but try flushing it out with Scotch or Whiskey, perhaps this will heal it?

That's so lame, hope it heals up for the 20th

I do too. If it doesn't then I'll smoke anyway, just not as much. The tobacco still tastes good, it just hurts the sore.

Thats a good idea, except for the fact that I'm not old enough to drink

Is the sore the aftermath of smoking too much or too hot and the steam hitting one spot of your mouth all the time and causing the sore/cooked flesh?
Anyone else ever get these?

That is how a abscess works uber, on the outside of gum beneath the tooth. I have had a few of them, they are no fun!! It is infection, have it looked at

I plan to. I have a dentist appointment next Wednesday for something unrelated. I don't know if I should wait that long, but I doubt I can get in sooner

Definitely get it checked out ASAP, if it turns out to be nothing, awesome; but if it is an absess or infection, it's not going to get (or feel) better (or cheaper) by leaving it alone.
Be sure to get a picture of the cute little dental assistant while you're there.
A nice change from the usual request of photos of the topic at hand. I applaud your restraint in not asking for pics of Uber's gum infection, as I am enjoying my lunch while I read this thread.
There aren't any at my dentist
Now that, my friend, is a good reason to change dentists...assuming you have a choice in the matter (knowing you're in a small town and all).

Uber, here is a temporary help. 1/8 teaspoon non-iodized salt in 8 oz. warm water. Rinse with it several times a day. If you can hold it in your mouth for a few minutes, even better. This is a tip from several piercers for oral piercings. Non-iodized salt is usually sea salt or kosher salt. The salt water will draw out some of the infection . Will also help heal after the dentist visit.
Just my $.02 as a body modification forum mod. I have had a lot of people with oral piercings getting infected and this simple trick helps a lot. Also good for regular piercings. Just apply with a cotton ball.

I had something weird like this happen when I tried to rehydrate some baccy with regular tap water long ago and far away. Only lasted about 5 days and then it was gone. I doubt this is what happened to you but if youre going to get it checked out, good for you.
