I've used both PC's and Apple products over the years and seen Apple's clear superiority over Windows erode in the area of graphics. Earlier Windows OS's lacked the memory caching necessary to handle large graphics files, having been designed for use in business offices. A 7KB note is a different character than a 250MB graphics file. The thing that Windows did best in a graphics environment was seize up and die.
That certainly changed with the growth of gaming. I still use Apple because it retains technological superiority in color management and handling, which is central to my user needs. But in many other respects other platforms may be a better choice. As for being able to configure my machine or workspace, I have enough options to satisfy my needs and can open up a shell and type in commands if I need to.

The OP did not mention stock prices, so neither will I.
When you add in the cost of technical support (which the savvy users of either producers don't need often), down time for crashes, updating "resources", most Macs are cheaper to own than MS running machines. I am a Mac guy since the Mac Plus, and detest some of the business practices of Gates and Ballmer, so I admit my bias. Both companies have come a long way, and if it weren't for Apple, PCers would be running DOS v.3.6.3.2 or some such.

I'm a horse and buggy guy, but I need tech to live in this world we live in. PCs are a hassle, if you do not want to help them evolve over time. Apple is worry free, most of the time. I'm done with Microsoft and the PC market. If I were a computer geek, I'd probably prefer a PC, for the obvious reasons stated above. Hell, I so computer lazy, I won't go to the trouble to learn how to post photos on Pipesmagazine.com. Back to the Brain Cave.

Lol ... sorry for slightly expanding this conversation. The MSFT vs AAPL debate is a pretty well beat horse though.
because the stock reached a point of overvalue? Or did you really expect the stock to stay as high as it was?
IMHO, it's due to market saturation with smart phones and the world economy in general (global deflation).

Why do you think the market is saturated with smart phones? I have a small pile of them, along with iPads of different generations, in a corner which my family have accumulated over the years. I do not like being more than a generation behind. Obsolescence and technology improvements and innovation drive these markets. No such thing as market saturation with this type of technology.
The developers are making up stuff no one knew was necessary, may still not be, and creating new "needs." A phone with a camera? A phone which can send text? A wee computer on which you can watch movies while at 30,000 feet? A watch which lets you answer the cell phone? Who knew these things would become necessities, the misplacing of which can now cause great angst among some. I can carry a rather large library, books, movies and music around in my back pocket should I desire.
Smart phones and tablets are the "Air Jordans" of today. No kid wants dated tennys, anymore than a dated X-Box. Kids have a lot of disposable income so, game devices, phones, tablets, etc. have to be the latest. Older adults do not drive such markets, young people do. How many teenage hamburger flippers do you see with older phones? They do quite well with minimum wage. After all the parents are taking care of their needs. So, most only have to be concerned with the "wants" in life.
China's economy is doing quite well. Actually, the US's economy is quite healthy in spite of what the media presents. Good investments abound.
As for Apple driving the OS competition? Hardly! Technology drives both of the major platforms. Chip improvements really do the driving of the entire industry. Old Jeremy said it best, "Speed! I want more speed!" Not everyone needs more speed of course. But, more speed is sexy! Boosts the ego!
It is indeed a wondrous world we live in today. 'Tis true even if one doesn't like or use the technology. Much like the auto displacing the horse. Some were not happy and were left behind, mucking stalls and currying the old broom tail, bemoaning the fate of the new world.

China's economy is doing quite well
China's stock market almost completely crashed this year and would have had the Chinese government not propped it up with emergency funds. It fell 30 percent over three weeks and 1,400 companies, more than half listed, filed for a trading halt.
Among many other examples of economic malady, there is also a very serious real-estate bubble in China that has yet to "pop".
Finally, as to my comment on Global Deflation in general, the Baltic Dry Index is at 30 year lows:

If your only measure of the economy is the stock market, I suppose you would feel as you do. I ain't buying it, too much spending going on. Too many smart phones going out the door.
Has the US economy been better? Sure. It has been worse also. The numbers speak to certain stats, people's spending is the reality. The economy is going along quite nicely in my opinion. Currently it is neither overheated or cold, just happily going along providing profits and investment opportunities. Of course a tanking economy provides great investment opportunities also. My pragmatism is nothing if not positive. I always look for the upside of the downside.
The only change I see in the near future is that the pundits and economists, et alii will make their pronouncements long enough and loud enough that the spending public will start to believe them and pull back on the spending. The pendulum does indeed swing back and forth.

It's FAR from my only measure ... the BDI that I listed above, for example, is one of dozens that I look at.
Another measure that I follow is the Velocity of Money ... and it's not moving. Couple this with the fact that the Supply of Money is at an all time high and draw your own conclusions.
I'm not a "doom and gloomer" but I AM paying attention ... and all is not well.

Paying attention is all we can do. Watching and weighing the options is sometimes a pain.
I guess we are having a conflict of using of different tools and indicators. Sort of a cake, no cake debate with considerably more expensive consequences for errors. Up or down the economy provides opportunities. It is what it is I suppose. I tend to look for companies which function best in good and bad economies, so pay less attention (probably should pay closer heed) to forecasts and economic indicators.

So true ... this has been a pretty crazy year trying to figure out the next move. 8O

Very wise! Best wishes in the coming year and a hope for prosperity for all.

I don't want to get into this discussion but I have a few short things to say and then I'll attempt to walk away.
Both have successful stores
I wouldn't say MS has successful stores. I have both Apple and MS stores near me in multiple locations. I can walk by the MS stores any day of the week and it's empty. The Apple stores on the other hand you can't even get in the door.
Is this a NY and CT anomaly? Hmm probably not.
The other comments I have are lordofthepiperings and cobguy are on crack. Cob just take a look at how MS and Apple stocks have fared since the dotcom bubble burst of 2000. One's up about 100% and the other is up about 2000%.

Apple is about design, great user interface, and as one of my friend told me it's like a nice car, it get you where you want without any trouble. A pc does not have design or good user interface but is more customizable and it's like a moto it can get you somewhere freaking fast but it can crash a couple times.
I'm a mac fan, find them easier to work with, no bugs, no viruses, less problems and find their design great to look at and work with, but hey I'm an architect, I love design so... and yeah they charge way too mucch for the same computer parts then a pc but they got to pay for that design development.

PC or Mac............neither, Tandy 1000( bought in 1990 for my first business), now that is real computer. Or how abnut a DOS system( with those big floppy drives) that was so freaking hard to understand.
My oldest son hates Apple, my oldest daughter and youngest son love Apple, my 13 yeaar old daughter, to be determined at a later date. Android or Mac phones.....I use neither and still use an older LG phone with a keyboard that has real buttons. I refuse to go with a smart phone.
I began with Windows 95 on my home computer, spyware seems to be a Microsoft creation, how else can you explain that Apple has no issues with it and an entire industry was born to handle the Microsoft spyware issues.
If I did not have to re learn an entire operating system, I would probably switch to Apple, but I am too old.

My father is 70 and just made the shift to Apple and LOVES it. Has an iPhone and a MacBook Pro now. It's FAR easier than you'd think.

Nate, I bought a Samsung Tablet the Christma before last as a gift to myself and the only thing I found useful on it was the Kindle Reader. I honestly hated the thing as none of my favorite sites( ESPN, PGA Tour and other sports sites) worked worth a shit. Pages did not load like they were supposed to. I could barely type on it with the touch screen, my fingers are way too fat for it. I ended up giving it to my 13 so she could use it. I ended up just buying a Kindle reader from Best Buy and I love it.

Yeah my father has trouble with a touchscreen as well, but if a Kindle serves your purposes than terrific! No point in buying things you don't require.

Thanks bigpond.
Nate, do the pages load like they are supposed to on an Apple tablet or do they have their own look to them like on a Windows tablet? It would be cool if I could get the best of both worlds, and have full screen pages like I do on my laptop.
