Agreed regarding the slayer albums, they have really "evolved" or at least changed their profile since the early days.I still like most of it though.
venturing into darker realms I like a Swedish band called dissection

++1 @alexnorth Dissection was awesome. The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bain are CLASSICS. I could listen to those two albums any day.

I'm glad to hear it
[edit]

posted by itself... I'm glad to hear you liked them. I really do and I'm not usually into the whole black metal "thing" with the makeup and everything but these guys are good. Interesting philosophical lyrics aswell.

(I believe they didn't actually do makeup. More a case of philosophy over posing.)
(not saying other bands are posers! ... You get what I mean right?!)

Speaking of Slayer, I happen to known in a round about manner and had drinks more than a few times with Kerry King. He's a really awesome guy!

@alexnorth I love me some black metal. The raw sound that is usually associated with it and the genre style in general is something I really like. Certainly isn't for everyone but Dissection was more melodic than your Gorgoroth's, Darkthrone's, etc. I really dig melodic black metal.
+1 @freakiefrog that's pretty kick ass.

It's not all I listen to anymore, and in fact I don't listen to it very often simply because of the broader range of music I enjoy now. However, metal is still my favorite genre and has been since the 80's.... god I feel old. With all the different styles or genre's within the genre, I enjoy most, cranking out Iron Maiden alongside Pantera, or Metallica alongside Dio. I highly enjoy bands such as Iced Earth, or Nightwish, or Kamelot or Manowar and a huge favorite of mine... Savatage. I can listen to the old bands right alongside the newer bands as well. The heaviness of bands such as As I Lay Dying really get my blood pumping. It all just depends on the mood. However, there is very little metal I can listen to while smoking a pipe. To me these two of my favorite things remain separate. With a pipe, I prefer my music a bit softer.

I like other music genre's but love metal the most and listen to it the most.
Love Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Slayer ... the old guard of heavy, thrash and speed metal. I probably listen to Maiden and Dio more than anyone else from the 70s and 80s. I love when people bring up Savatage, a classic band that was kind of overlooked.

I listen to a bit of everything, from old country to jazz, but I have a real soft spot for doom, sludge, etc.
Sleep's "Jerusalem" is a top five album for me. Electric Wizard are great, and Hooded Menace is one of the better ones among the newer bands. Grief, Corrupted, Eyehategod, early stuff by Boris, early Melvins, Cathedral, Windhand, etc., are all great stuff.

They have their following, though. And for those who might be fans of Transyberian Orchestra. If it wasn't for Savatage, TSO never would have happened. The hit that made TSO famous originated on Savatage's Dead Winter Dead album and was titled Christmas Eve/Sarajevo. The following year, that song was all over the radio around Christmas time but billed as a song from Transyberian Orchestra. I remember lol, because I was pissed, thinking they were getting the name of the band wrong! Anyway, apparently Paul O'neil, Savatage's producer, basically put together a new band consisting of Savatage and a bunch of other musicians and singers and TSO was born doing mostly Christmas related rock operas. Now they're bigger than Savatage ever was and some of the songs are redone or revisited in bits and pieces as TSO songs... a lyric here, a melody there... always something that pays homage to their roots and makes someone like me appreciate the music even more. They usually tour around the holiday season, and I plan to catch them live at some point, but tickets are quite pricey.

Totally forgot about Pilgrim, great new doom with good melodic vocals, if you prefer those over the rougher side of things. Check out their album "Void Worship." Also, Conan from the UK, and on the more stoner rock side of things, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Just heard a few tracks from a new doom band called Crypt Sermon that seems worth checking out, too.

nobody shreds like Kerry King because he's not good. He just hits a bunch of random notes like a 4 year old sitting at a piano.

I don't listen to a lot of metal, but Mastodon and Pig Destroyer are pretty good.

Apart from that, Deep Purple, Sabbath and Motorhead.

+1 @jeffsimpson, Visigoth is badass and I am hoping they'll expand their tour schedule to include Denver. Do you use Bandcamp at all?
