Metal Tubing

Has teh use of the metal tubing as shank repair gotten out of hand? Have seen canadiennes and lumbermen with those nice long shanks cut down to around the same overall length as a grabow duke, and the mighty use of that wonderful steel tubing to facilitate the murder.
