Oh, I'm pretty sure some of 'em were smoking actual tobacco. The kind I'm thinking of, anyway. I'm imagining,. not a groovy swingin' pad, but... Nehru jacket, classical music on the stereo, Indian and Chinese objects in the decor, Turkish rug. And one of these table pipes, filled with some ultratraditional English blend.

The Merchant Service hose is 3/8" diameter. You can use cloth wrapped bicycle pump hoses as well—they're not appreciably different.

My question would be: How stiff is the hose on this pipe? When you turn your head, does the hose shove the bowl around the table (or over the edge)?

Yes, it does.

I should say that I have a Savinelli version with a straight bit instead of the bent one shown on the Merchant Service pipe. The pipe smokes well enough, but the possibility of the bowl getting pulled off the table means I only smoke it occasionally.

The hose looks a lot like the cloth-braided fuel hose I get for my old VWs:
