That's pretty interesting. You are right, KY Burley would count as burley still, and is a valid answer.
Your name Makhorka Smoker refers to Russian/Soviet shag makhorka. I had White Sea Canals as if they were cigars and thought it was OK, kind of a wild bushy smell. Does that mean I ended up smoking makhorka?
I made a thread on Herzegovina Flor and Kapitanskiy, two Soviet blends. have you heard of them?
No, I don’t know anything about those blends. But I’m going to read the post you link with more care and investigate. I chose that handle when I signed up here years ago because I had a minor obsession with green-cured nicotania rustica. I was growing it and trying to imitate both native North American and Russian curing methods (which were surprisingly similar).

I've noticed that most people who are bothered by certain blend types tend to be bothered in the same way... those bothered by VAs tend to complain that it's their tongue that gets bothered, those bothered by burley tend to complain it's their throat.

Of course it may not be the tobacco itself, but something else. There's a tendency to do certain things to VAs that they don't do to burley's and vice-versa. Could also explain why one is bothered by most blends of X-type except for this, this or that blend.

So, mellow... might give Wessex Burley Slices a try. Definitely the aforementioned Semois. If you haven't had any LJP, try their non-aromatic burley sampler and their aromatic burley sampler (most of their aromatic burley blends aren't super strongly topped or heavy handed in flavoring). Their blend 52 is a good one, that and Blend DD are my most favorite of the LJP burley. The ones that do have flavor don't blow out the burley taste, but some are more heavily flavored than others.

I'd also give Mac Baren's Navy Flake a hesitant recommendation based on what you've posted.

Savinelli Jupiter is underrated and another good one.

That part is pretty cool. I would like to help more about that from you.
The Native American tradition is one of my favorite aspects to tobacco.
It really got me started: I had been puffing cigarettes without inhalation like cigars. I was really into American Spirits. Then one day I saw American Spirit RYO Pow Wow Blend. I realized I needed to either get a pipe or do RYO. A pipe seemed alot simpler, and I got a cob. Thus I began my pipe journey.

It’s like eating straight lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce.:)

The Buoy Gold I love so much probably has enough white burley to soften it and cut the bite.
How do you see White burley vs Dark burley in that regard?
I recall White Burley being alleged to be soft, sweet, whereas Dark Burley was supposedly bitter, harsher.
PA is supposedly a white burley, I recall. I like it, but it's true that it's cased and I don't know what it would be like with no casing.
American Spirit RYO AFAIK is not cased and I thought it was OK, not bad or very good. But no bite or harshness either.

This is the book that inspired me. Well worth a look if the subject interests you and you can find a copy
