Yes, some carvers prefer to leave it natural, while others prefer henna powder to darken the color.The wax of the carvers who use henna powder smells really bad.There is no problem as long as it is not poured into a bowl.If it leaks, it can at least be removed by sanding.If this smell is caused by wax, sanding bowl chamber may be the solution to the problem.

I’m writing from the country where it’s produced. As I’ve explained in several places before, I don’t recommend meerschaum pipes except from a few makers. Most of them don’t even know how to properly craft a pipe. Their stems are mostly pre-made and simply fitted onto whichever pipe they happen to match. The makers are usually meerschaum carvers, not true pipe makers. You get deceived by the unusual shapes. Except for the few masters I’ve mentioned, nobody here buys meerschaum pipes from the carvers you purchase from. As for the case your pipe came in—if it’s a fitcase and the pipe has spent too much time inside it, then the smell you notice inside the pipe comes from that case. It will fade as you smoke it.

Some brands that you regard as very good are actually selling pipes made by local carvers, simply stamping their brand on them. Technically, they are not producers, they are dealers.

I've only ever heard of Baki and Altinay. Baki is no longer making pipes and Altinay has made some unfavorable comments about quality.
