Probably wax. I’ve rewaxed mine before and gotten a weird taste. It’ll dissipate over time.
Not goopy at all, and it was quite dry, though not to jpmcwjr's standards.
He would only condone hot water!!I'm sure you didn't get his permission to use the gin either.
Let's see:
- A bear asking us to bear with him.
- New meers will taste like chalk and mute tobacco flavors until they are saturated with tobacco oils.
- Meer is like fired clay, don't think you damaged it with relights.
- Never use alcohol on a meer.
- You may have overheated the screw in plastic mortise insert causing the plastic taste.
Don't be shy. I'm learning as I go, but I don't think they are as finicky to care for and feed as they might initially appear. I believe that once you learn the ropes you're set, just like a briar pipe or any other new tool. That’s a beautiful meerschaum! I’ve no clue as to the plastic taste, but this thread has given me another push to acquire my first meer.
I’m kind of scared by them because I don’t really know the proper care and feeding of one (lol). I’ll tackle that, but again that’s a really nice looking pipe.
I HAD to disinfect it, at least the first time. I watched a video of Meerschaum making and saw the artisan blow on them.
now is to smoke several 8oz cans of Old Joe Krantz in it as soon as possible.
