I've smoked meerschaum pipes for over 10 years now, and viewed hundreds more as well. I have only seen one pressed meerschaum pipe, and it was over 100 years old, a European (Tyrolean) type of pipe. I was told it was made from pressed meerschaum, otherwise I would not have been able to tell.
With the large majority or pipes coming from Turkey these days, where most meerschaum is mined, most pipes are really inexpensive, so much that I wonder if any one even makes pipes from pressed meerschaum. I honestly don't think I could buy a new-made, pressed meerschaum pipe today, even if I wanted to, as I would have no clue where to find one.
In the old days, meerschaum pipes were always among the most expensive pipes a person could own, even more than most Dunhills, Barlings or Charatans; read old pipe catalogs and you will see for yourself. Today's meerschaum pipes, even at $100-$200 are cheaper than they have ever been. Thoughts?
