Hi there, I'm new to the pipe smoking world and in need of advice. I went to Nat Sherman today for a pipe and had a choice between an unfinished pipe by Erick Nording, or a Meerschaum lined pipe. Both in the same price range. I would like to know if the lined one is better over the Nording one.

I have no experience with Meerschaum lined pipes but Nording are fine pipes.

I don't have a link of the meer lined pipe. I believe it's an italian make. that's about all i know.

I have never been a fan of meer lined pipes, but I couldnt give you one good reason why. I imagine they would smoke just fine, but still I cant help but recommend the Nording. My experience says Nordings are just good pipes, but I dont have any bad experience with meer lined pipes, so tough call.

I liked the Nording much more than the meerschaum lined. The only thing that bothers me is the carbon coating. I feel like I'm cheating the art of pipe smoking.

I have both Nording and meer lined pipes... Love them all, however the Nordings have a larger bowl and thus far tend to see more smoke action. Three of my meer lined pipes are from the 70's, sold as new old stock, the other three I have no idea of their age..

I have one Meer lined pipe... it's a Peterson Canadian and it smokes great, I do not have a Nording but have heard nothing but great things from people about them.

I would go along with what some others are saying... go with the one that "calls" to you.

The Nording would be a good choice. Most pre-smoke coatings can be easily removed before smoking. Yes, many lined meer are press rather than block. They smoke OK but not really anything special and caution is required when maintaining the bowl surface.

I would imagine that the fragility and suspect quality of the meerschaum lining make it less desirable than your Nording, if you happen to like it at all...

I have a Meer lined Brebbia Sun, it is one of my best and maybe my favorite pipe. Smokes excellent, dry, cool, and no bite. Recommendet.

Meer lined pipes are fairly easy to come by on ebay and are far less expensive than a new Nording. I have a couple by "briarmeer" and I use them as my pocket pipes, they're fairly small, can be smoked all day without much worry, and run 15-20 bucks depending on the auction you find.
