Meerschaum Lined Briar Question

I am wondering if a meerschaum lined bowl in a briar pipe has the same reusable quality as a regular meerschaum pipe in that you can easily smoke it multiple times a day without worrying about damaging i or losing flavor quality?

Short answer yes. i have a Vauen meer lined that was already developing cracks in the bowl after 3 smokes and no poor handling while following break in instructions. Is your pipe real meer or pressed block?

You can smoke any pipe like that if you keep them clean.

Most briar meerschaum inserts are pressed meer.

There are some very attractive ones. Brebbia's Mara Bianca ones are stunning.

I agree, visually striking. Mixing the two mediums is not something I’m going to personally do again. Knowing what I know now, I’d get one of each!

I do have one (a "Bing") which was bought in the '70's. Still going strong, though it's not used as often these because of the small bowl size.

biggest problem with them in my opinion is that the meer takes up chamber real-estate.
I'd say their for people who like the smoking qualities of meer but want something that won't break as easily and can be handled like a briar. Honestly I think the buy a regular meer is a better plan. Why because you'll probably want to smoke the meer more often then a meer lined. Personally if I am in the mood for that kind of smoke I'd rather be adding some color to the pipe while getting that kind of smoke. I don't find meer to be better then briar just different. So that's where you can put your pinch of salt.

Love the meerschaum lined briars in my rotation, from the Melina Olive Wood to three 40s-50s Heibe's.

The Heibe meerschaum lined briars aren't large bowls [2 x Billiards 2 x Dublins] They need to be rested or they 'glug up' from moisture.

The Melina is a larger bowl [Billiard] and is more forgiving. 2-3 bowls a day wouldn't be a problem.

Certain blends behave better in my meerschaum lined bowls than a briar or cob.
One blend in-particular. MB Plumcake is a favourite - really nice flavour and I just love the tin note - but it bites me like no other blend.

When smoked in my 40s-50s meerschaum lined Heibe Goldpoint Dublin, I can smoke one bowl a day without any bite.

I'd rather be adding some color to the pipe while getting that kind of smoke.

Sadly I'm in the minority who don't like meers in the "in-between" stages of getting a patina. I love the look of a pristine of a "white goddess" and ones that have achieved a lovely graduated colouration. I even like pre-coloured meers.
I just don't have any love for the mottled look. Just me

My Medico Seafoam smokes ok but tends to smoke wet. The meershaum insert has held up very well over many years and shows no sign of cracks or unusual wear.

I own two Meer-lined, a Grabow Dublin and a Field and Stream. I need to dig these out. I water rinse my pipes often, especially Meer-lined. Build up of carbon can get out of control on them if not. That said, they’re ready to go again in no time. Good smokers, especially the conical chambered Grabow. Nice looking as well.
