My Astas Meer claw came with a free meerschaum filter that goes in the bottom of the bowl. Thought I'd never even try it, but I'm about ready to stock up on em. Love em.
Those meerschaum filters were the reason I started using meer chips.
Dave (@Ahi Ka ) gifted me a few meer filters which I tried and really liked.
Meer chips and Keystones are a much cheaper alternative to those filters

How many smokes do you get out of these things?
I only use them in antique meers and even a calabash to stop crap getting into the shank and supposedly helps with colouring in a similar vein to having a coin/button in there. I have probably had a dozen smokes out of one so far and haven’t changed it yet, I have cleaned it though.

The only downside is they don’t suit all chamber shapes.

Thanks for the info. I may give them a try

What's the point of meer chips in a meer pipe? I know it's all personal preference like everything in this sport, but why do you like them?

These are what I use

Edit: I got them because the Weez recommended them. Can’t get a better sales pitch than that
In years gone by, you would use a metal button, or drill a few holes in a coin and place them in the bottom of your meer to stop sucking up bits of tobacco, but most likely as a colouring aid

Those meer cones serve the same purpose

I don't use the chips, just the filter with the holes in it. And idk this is my first one, but I get WAY less dottle after smoking. Idk how it works. Probably magic. Also as a bonus, the chamber is a little larger than im used to, so the filter shortens up the smoke for me.

Makes sense I suppose, I get less dottle because I swear there should be more tobacco in there, so I keep smoking it till there's NOTHING. Lol

I'm a big fan of these chips for less dottle and also for lifting the floor of the chamber a bit, esp on Peterson System pipes. I feel like I get a much better burn in Systems when using meer chips.

Tried the Nording keystones twice now. Once in a 9mm filtered cob and once in a 9mm filtered Vauen. My take - aways so far are positive. I’m an aro smoker largely, and don’t often dry out my tobacco.

First try I got no dottle but a little tongue bite even with the 9mm filter. Second time, no tongue bite but again no dottle. Just took the first time to adjust to the new more open draw etc I guess.

After two smokes, stones still the same colour as they were initially. Gonna monitor how many smokes before they blacken.

With 50grams of pipe tobacco costing between $50-$75 CAD, seeing no wasted tobacco at the end of the pipe resulted in a pretty big smile.

Even though getting a bulk bag costs almost $40 CAD with shipping compared to the $13 USD, the tobacco savings should offset the cost. 🤞

Just my 2 cents so far.
