I bought the brother to the IMP you mentioned. A silver mounted panel acorn. It seems exceptionally well made and smokes like a charm. I am very partial to Tekin or IMP.

Of the Meers I smoke all the time, I have one Altinok, one SMS, one CAO, and a no name. All are fantastic pipes. All color distinctly. Most have replacement black stems (because that’s what I prefer).

The SMS and no name are what I would describe as “average” sized pipes. They are as large as most normal briars.

The Altinok and CAO (both smooth) are larger than average and, at first, had a “feel” that was hard to get used to (not their smoking capabilities, though).

Now, I love each one and smoke them all in rotation. I might be on a multi-year Meer kick because they are the pipes I smoke almost exclusively right now, and have for some time.

I’d love to have an IMP and an Altinay to round out my Meerschaum experience one day. But I have absolutely no regrets or complaints about the smokability or beautiful coloring of any of the Meers mentioned above. image.jpg

Altinay makes small and large pipes, just pay attention to the dimensions and weight. Keep in mind the smaller ones have screw in fittings. They also have filtered pipes that you can forego the filter and smoke without. @brian64 has these and he loves them.
I do indeed. As others have commented, the filtered pipes without a filter are rather like a reverse calabash.

As for the size, all of my Altinays are their large size, and they are plenty big enough for me...a bowl typically lasts the better part of an hour depending on the blend, but they're definitely not Embers large.

No experience with Altinok but they look good and well made and come highly regarded. I’ve got 2 IMPs, 2 Altinays and a SMS.

Don’t think you can go wrong with IMP, Altinay or Altinok. I will say, as far as comfort, I prefer the stems a bit more on my Altinays over the IMPs.

Here is one of my IMPs with a replacement stem, which ran me $50. I love this pipe, even with the original stem that I’ll hang on to for some variety.

Who made the replacement stem for you?

I would say check out other meerschaum pipe dealers and see which master carvers they work with. For examples, meerschaum market carries pipes by Baglan, Tekin, Yanik, Servi and Cevher. I've bought several pipes from meerschaum market and they have all been good quality.

My only issue with Altinay is they mostly make smaller pipes and often only have protective sleeves instead of fitted cases. Good quality though.

I have a few Altinay pipes in my collection now since I have discovered meerschaum pipes ;) Four of them in fitted cases. Only the new ones from today come with a sleeve... in a luxurious made hard box.

I think Altinay wants to make a difference with the presentation of their pipes nowadays to get rid of that oldfashioned look.

Been nearly two years since I made that post and I've had a change of opinion for several reasons and won't personally own an Altinay. The old fashioned look offers more protection from damage though.

I am afraid I have not seen that post. It was just my idea now after having received one of their new pipes that I recently ordered from their website.

Nevertheless, this older group 4 sized, 9mm pipe, used without filter has become one of my favorite Latakia pipes in no time :)

The one you replied to above.

In general, they very rarely make pipes in a size range that I'm comfortable with. They're figurals leave much to be desired and they've told owners a couple of times to look over flaws in their products.

"Been nearly two years since I made that post " made me think of a post from two years ago... Sorry :)

There is only one person I trust. On ebay she goes by meerschaumpipes. Peronally I stay away from the larger outfits as I have had some problems with them and the quality of the meerschaum. They all say they sell “block meerschaum“. It is a catch phrase. She takes personal care with your order and her knowledge about meerschaum is unsurpassed. Look at her feedback. I wouldn’t purchase from anyone else. She has a good variety of shapes and prices. She is a native but sells from the US and has a long standing relationship with the master carvers. I am commissioning a pipe from one of her master carvers now.
