I really hope i didn't ruin my meer!?
Ive had my meer for a little now, and decided to wipe down the inside with a pipe cleaner dipped in alcohol, after doing so i noticed it turned a little pinkish inside and had a funky smell, then after drying for a few hours it turned a slight yellowish with the smell not as bad inside (even almost looking like it was white again).
Did i ruin it?
What im thinking is ill leave it alone for a day or two and try smoking it then hopefully the smell/damage is gone.

Thanks but Im looking for an answer that would explain why it turned the colors it did (with that smell) and if its damaged or not.

I haven't seen Yavuz online yet...

We'll keep it bumped until he has a chance to address your issue.

I'm not terribly worried that you have ruined your meer.

They are really tougher than you think.

But, they do require a bit extra care.

In that string I posed the question about using Q-tips and saliva to clean the inside of the bowl.

He thought it was a good idea... and it does work.

However; if you're looking to return the inside of the bowl to white, you are probably wasting your time.

The aesthetic draw of a Meerschaum pipe is its color changing aspect.

That is an effect of the oil from the tobacco migrating to the surface of the pipe.

Be sure to allow the pipe to completely dry before you attempt to smoke it again.

When it is dry, you should have no issues... IMHO.

:puffy:

I've been talking to him on facebook for about 4 hours now. I'll tell him there is a question for him.

Lawrence, great to have you by my side :D
I haven't smoked this one pipe yet and hope that when i do that stink/taste wont be triggered to start some how through either the heat or moist of smoking a pipe you know. just took another whiff and it seems to have subsided but still lingering (when i puffed plain air, i tasted that stink a little).
it no longer has any of that 'powdery leftover' when i put my finger in, its just dry and smooth now.

Yavuz! Just the guy we were waiting for.
See to be honest with you, i don't know if its high quality but i wouldn't be surprised if its low quality, if its low quality, is it ruined forever?
If its low quality, will the alcohol that was absorbed eventually leave?

Wow, and I thought it was just smoke, wipe, pack and smoke again. Meerschaum pipes suddenly just got a little more complicated to me. Thanks for the post timm2.

Photoman: I tried to take a good pic but its just not coming out right.
Yavuz: so even if its low low quality it will still be OK, that's good to hear. Like you suggest, i will wait a week and update on how all goes.
Lawrence, Photoman, Storient, thank you guys very much!

Glad you are here with us. I don't know if I told you this already but if you have any technical questions about the forum, how to upload photos, or any general questions feel free to send me a private message. This is a great forum and you will meet some great people. I don't know if you know who Storient/Yavuz is but he sells meerschaum pipes. Here is his website if you ever want to buy one. He only uses the highest quality meerschaum.

Thanks Yavuz. Now that I've smoked my cheap meer and know that I like it, I am in the market for your high quality meers. Deciding on your PM2012 or your mermaid(realize from a previous thread that you have to eventually have a female fugure pipe)
