I’m not to worried about sand pits in my briar, I just fill the holes with superglue, ramen noodles, and saw dust.

I remember seeing an ad from the 1950's or so where the pipe company said they x-ray the blocks for their high-end pipes to check for flaws.
Save yourself the expense and ridicule, commission a pipe from a trustworthy Artisan.

I think answer C is the right one, if so, you shouldn't commission a pipe if you don't trust the judgement of the artisan. I have 2 commissions on the way and let the artisans decide judging the wood what should be done as a finish. If you have a preference on the finish just tell them, they can pick the right block of wood for your preferred finish or wait for a block without it being x-rayed.

Try a local veterinarian. They have X-ray machines and little oversight.

Who says they have to know. I'm an x-ray tech. If I was still working in a hospital I'd definitely do it on one of my pipes. Id then print it, frame it, and hang it on the wall.
