Anyone tried McConnell Red Virginia? Some places it says it is chocolate flavoured - other places that it is not.

I’ve a few tins that I’ve been meaning to get to in the cellar. I’ve heard the same thing regarding the cocoa casing. A VaPer with cocoa added…sound tasty for a change of pace. ☕

It is cased with the same stuff that most K&K virginias have, but I didn't think of chocolate when I tried it. That's what I remember. Not an impressive tobacco. Scottiah Cake or Black Parrot are better, specially the last one.

I smoked a tin of this and I definitely did sense a chocolate or cocoa note when puffed slowly. This blend did tend to bite me quite a bit. I did enjoy the tin, but I probably will never purchase another.

from what to what
From tobaccoreviews.com

2003:
"This is not the original Red Va. of the 70's and 80's that I loved so well, but is still a formidable tobacco. The original did not have Perique, nor any topping, and was similar to Hal O' The Wynd of the same era. The new blend has a very light topping,"

2005:
"This is indeed a lovely VA blend, smooth and buttery. My tin was from '92 and it is way better than K&K's version. I could not detect much Périque, and I suspect some Virginia Cavendish has been added."

I'm sure I read somewhere that the recipe had changed over the years and that it didn't used to have a chocolate topping but I searched and couldn't find it.

Yes, I love MRV. I can sort of detect a chocolate (and/or berry) note...AFTER the tin has been opened and allowed to breathe a bit. Once you open it, let out sit for a week, then come back to it. I think you'll notice a big difference.
