I mentioned that same characteristic on another pipe forum and was vilified as a McClelland basher, a troublemaker, and potential terrorist threat to the honest pipe smoking community.
They sound like a group of prats...ive never understood attacking people due to their tastes...especially in such a diverse community as pipe smokers

The "ketchup" smell in many McClelland blends is the smell of aging tobacco. I know there has been a thread on it. It's not a topping or a casing.
McClelland makes some very fine Virginias. My favorite is probably Blackwoods Flake. I dislike the Frogs, however.

Thank you for enlightening me. Still, I cannot get over that smell. Personal preference. I'm probably missing out on some good blends but.....

I have a bit of a love affair with Across The Pond. The other blends in the series are excellent, but that one just stood out as very pleasureable to me.

Anyone know the origin of the name, I've seen it for years and always wondered. Great review. The Mac smell always reminded me of worcestershire sauce. Can't do that. Sounds like Frog has a large following.

Recently bought tins of Frog Morton Across the Pond and On the Town. The experience smoking these tobaccos is akin to when I first discovered Irish-English ales and stouts at a pub near the university I was doing my doctoral work at. Until then I did not now how wonderful ale could taste. Likewise these tobaccos have been two of the best I have tried. Though admiditly thre are a few others I have been introduced to of comparable good quality like "Shortcut to the Mushrooms" and "Emperor Norton"

+1 @rcstan....Well as I said above, I got a tin of Frog with my latest TAD. I won't bore you with my review as its almost exactly what Mr rcstan said in his review except for one thing.
OMG I LOVE THIS STUFF....this is absolutely terrific in every way!!

Haven't tried the original but On the Town has been a very enjoyable smoke

Although it is only the 3rd pipe tobacco I've ever had

So I guess my opinion wouldn't be the best

Ah, but opinions are like hearts. Everyone has one. And with pipes and tobacco, no opinion is wrong, no matter what anyone else says.
I really like the 'On the Town' rendition of the Frog line. It's a pleasant Latakia blend which isn't as pungent as others, but incredibly tasty. By the way, welcome to the forums!

I had to do some page-thumbing but Frogmorton is mentioned on page 303 of Return of the King if you have the boxed set

My 100g tin arrived today. Thanks jameral! I opened it up and was hit with the smell of BBQ sauce. Then as i finished pulling off the top, the tab broke off and I had Baccy all over my lap. At this point the aroma became distinctively ketchup. Despite what my nose was telling me I loaded a bowl and lit it. It was cool, Smokey, delicious, and has no discernable after taste. I think I love Latakia...but please tell me they don't all smell like this!
