I wold not take that bet. Look at the classic movies of the 40's and 50's. Every man smoked a pipe back in the day. It made you look smart and classy. All college profs smoked, leading men smoked, Holmes and Watson smoked. Bing and Sinatra smoked. It was a thing back when.

I went to Bronners, the largest christmas store in America. I had just finished smoking my pipe. There was a crowd of people all walking in at once, as the usual around christmas time as Bronners is PACKED at that time of the year. I over heard an old lady near me say "You can smell all the smokers." I turned around, looked at her than loudly told me wife. "You can smell all the old people."

We were also walking through Christmas ornaments the other night, and I was surprised at how many ornaments had pipes on them.
Trout, we had a game where the first person to spot a pipe in a movie got to punch the other in the arm, we started noticing that almost every single movie had one of the characters smoking a pipe. It may have been shown briefly, but it was there if you keep an eye out. Just watch HBO for a few days, and I think you'll see what I mean.
We also watch a lot of Turner Movies and you'd have to watch through several movies before you'd ever see a pipe. And, if it was someone like Bing Crosby, you'd have to notice that he is almost always carrying the pipe, packing or thumping out his pipe. Hardly ever is he ever smoking it. In the movie High Society, we noticed that not a single time did anyone ever take a puff or draw off of any of the pipes or cigarettes seen in the movie. They were always thumping packs or putting cigs out, but never did anyone puff one. I'm not sure what that means, but I have noticed it in a few old movies.

Not so thrilled that some of the women said I reminded them of their father or grandfather
Yeah, you know you're out of the market at that point, trout. -laugh- Absolutely concur with my buds up there -- a ton of it's in how you carry yourself. You wrap yourself in "I'm not entitled, this is just normal & a part of me" & the ambience is set almost by default. :)

"I wouldn't piss on California if it were on fire. ...what, too soon? :puffy:". Definitely NOT too soon lmao!! Absolutely horrible place and I concur completely!!
As for pipe smoking in public I really do not notice much. I am not the guy you just walk up to and start talking to if I do not know you. So no grandapa stories lol. I have walked into places still smoking, not on purpose, and no one has said anything. As soon as I notice I put it in a pocket or snuff it out. Funny though I have walked in with an unlit pipe and get told no smoking lol. my response is "As soon as you see smoke let me know dumbass." sometimes I leave off "dumbass" depends on how rude they are.
Overall I agree people have much more tolerance for pipe smoking. My favorite though is a sick person hacking germs everywhere, but they have a comment about smoke lol.

I have had a few such interactions as well. Before I switched to pipe smoking I never received comments that smoking cigarettes was classy or sophisticated, that's for sure!

Is there any kind of screening process in place for granting asylum to California refugees?

I'm new here, and new to regular pipe smoking. I haven't smoked in public much, but the two times I did it instantly inspired the "reminds me of my grandpa" comment. I suppose this took me by surprise because I'm new. In my case, both times it was a young lady, and I'm married so it suits me fine if it deters interest. Even if I were single, I would not have had any interest because even though they were old enough to sell alcohol, they weren't old enough to have anything in common with me. I'm in my early 40's but I think my mid-life crisis is going the wrong direction or something; I believe men who like ladies in their 20s are fools, and I just picked up a tobacco habit that is apparently nearly extinct.
I do hope it survives, though. I am certain that pipes is where I will land for good with tobacco. I started off dipping and chewing (I'm from the South), moved on to cigarettes, back to dipping along with cigarettes (you can't always smoke in the military), then gave up cigarettes and stuck with dipping, then moved on to tobacco rolls and Swedish snus (REAL Swedish Snus). I picked up pipes to break the nicotine habit, reduce tobacco use all together, and to help me relax and go to sleep. I have a cold right now so I can't smoke a pipe, which is why I'm up at 3AM. Pipes have helped with sleeping more than anything else I have tried that isn't a prescription.
I took to pipes easily since I have smoked cigarettes and cigars regularly in the past, and pipes only a few times, but it seems to have come naturally. Everyone who knows I'm switching has been curious, and seems to want to WATCH me, which feels kind of odd. It does seem to be a novelty to people. But, I don't take any "Grandpa" comments as a bad thing since people under 30 annoy me when they speak to me at length anyway, and pipes are definitely a healthy decision for someone like me who has regularly consumed every form of tobacco known to man EXCEPT for pipes...until now.

I live in Sweden and it's the same remarks here.

People mentions their pipe smoking Grandfather or starts weed jokes.

Seems that younger people always associates pipe smoking with weed, that is their first and foremost association.

Tiresome, to say the least.
On the positives, a non-smoking girlfriend immediately picked out notes of hay when she smelled in one of my tobacco jars.

She also found smelling notes from her world, horses and stables, in my pipe tobaccos.

Interesting you bring this up, trout; I smoke my pipe near public areas quite often. Given that I only smoke after work, it's sometimes the only time I can fit it in is when I'm doing a chore away from my house. That said, I often get comments from people that they are surprised I'm smoking a pipe...and I'm in the tobacco belt of North Carolina. Just the other day I was sitting in front of my service station getting my oil changed (actually, my truck's oil changed), and a man walked past me and commented "you don't see that every day", and I was like what don't you see, and he said someone smoking a pipe...he was smoking a cigarette. I get this sort of thing a lot.
I don't think pipes will regain the popularity they had, say, 40 years ago, but I do think many see them as a novelty, but mostly, as too much work. A cigarette or chew or vaping is so much easier to make happen, and with patience these days, or lack thereof, people can't find the time to deal with all the pipe loading, tobacco buying, cleaning, etc., that goes along with smoking a pipe...and they don't get "high" from it either like they do pot.

Honestly, I see this a lot myself too. I'm in my early thirties and I have to fight it myself somewhat. Things aren't ever done 'fast enough' it seems, but the pipe forces me to slow down and relax. Gives me time to think about it. I appreciate the reminder.
As far as smoking in public, It seems like I always get more weed jokes, but that's sort of endemic to living in Colorado, especially Denver, since so many folks who smoke pot have migrated here. Though I have noticed that I can get away with smoking my pipe at the park during events or when I'm on a walk rather than being banned to the backyard like cigarette folks, or even the cigar smokers in my family too. No "grandad' references yet, but I'm sure they are coming since I sport a beard as well as a pipe.

Question to those who get comments. Are you smoking aromatics?
When I do get a comment about the smell (because usually it's just a comment about the pipe smoking proper), I'm probably smoking topped aromatics. I say 'probably' because I usually start the afternoon smoking ritual with something that's topped, then move to more non-aromatics as the night progress...I don't ever smoke the same thing every afternoon/evening, I always mix it up between topped aros and non-topped blends. Hence, when I'm out in a public place smoking where someone notices it, it's almost always earlier in the day when I'm smoking the aromatic. So to make a long story short, I've never really thought about it, but by design, they are probably smelling the aromatic as it's usually first in my daily rotation.

My wife is my main critic. The same blend will get a different response it seems. I rarely smoke aromatics and was wondering if there are some non Aeros that the public likes. Probably the ones ""grandpa" smoked.

Funny but when I was smoking weed, nobody used a pipe, until 15 years later. (Those I associated with)

Grandpas & uncles used them with tobacco in big cans.

Guys, you made me laugh :D. Thread amusing.
"my favorite uncle died a year ago and I miss the smell of his pipe, thank you for the reminder"

Here instead - I admit - I cried.
