His statement "There is more than enough pipe tobacco on the market today that is bound to keep most of us happy for the next few years" really struck home, years ago I thought I was gona do crazy trying to keep up with all the new blends and ones people rave about, one day I realize that Im really happy with the Codger blend and a few other I had so I just stopped, stocked the blends I had and liked, on occasion I might get a 1oz sample or try some from a friend, but I quit chasing my tail or in this case tobacco blends

Well written piece, but things are that bad and will get worse. No way around that fact. Businesses are closing up shop and it's getting started.

That's the real tragedy - fewer blends being available is sad, but not the end of the world.
It IS the end of a lot of peoples' world though, when they are being regulated out of business.

Thanks for that, Nate. I'd almost forgotten! (How embarrassing of me, I know, with all the Net's pipe boards talking about little else for weeks on end, you think I'd remember, right?)
Hey... here's an idea: Since otherwise-pointless reminders of depressing news are widely understood to be a Good and Necessary Thing, let's have Kevin hire a code writer to insert some sort of Death Metal-looking End of Pipe Days! graphic between every post on every thread. Like a banner ad, except un-clickable.
That way we'd get the message good-n-proper, and you wouldn't have to type so much. A win-win! :D

As did I. On a side note I am smoking ODF in an MM Cutty on my balcony in a tee shirt in Chicago in October.
Life is pretty sweet.

Will tightened regulation make pipe smoking more expensive and more trouble than it's worth? Or will the regs inhibit new blends and discourage one crop of pipe shops and retailers but give rise to others that base their business on adapting to the new market. If pipe smokers can't enjoy the delightful new blends that come out every month or two now, they can make an infinite number of home mixes as they do now every time they use up a couple of blends by mixing them together, or add a little cigar leaf to something else -- or Turkish, Oriental, Cavendish, Lat, Per, dark-fired, etc., all of which will remain available in one form or another. Pipe smoking is still the least expensive form of smoking, so there is a buffer between when the prices rise and when the price is simply too high. And finally, most pipe smokers are not nicotine dependent, so many could cut their bowls per week in half and still be in the game. The deeper questions of how much meddling, even in the name of health and wellbeing, institutions should be doing in individual private lives. Thanks for a glimmer of optimism Fred. I'm not euphoric, but I'm not in mourning either.

Parasites gonna parasite. Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke, especially 'cause you're going to be paying more for it.

We have more to lose from Dufus Peabrain signing Climate Change Treaties (Global Warming Religion for those with special needs) with other countries than this FDA overreach.

Well said. Thank god we have one willing to spill the beans about the Big Green Elephant in the room.

Hmmm, ain't there a saying about that somewhere or other? :)
The sky isn't falling* for us consumers, but as noted, the small guys are getting the shaft, and that's the bigger shame.
* OK, the ceiling has lowered, but we'll weather the storm.

Well made points in the article about amount of tobacco available and likely to be available for some time.
