But I find it hard to understand how any of the basic types of pipe tobacco can be disliked.
How can you not find aros delicious? Seriously vanilla or fruit taste great and when combined with tobacco wonderful.
Va blends how can you not enjoy the subtle sweet invigorating smoke?
How can you not enjoy the comforts of a good burly?
How can you not marvel at the multifaceted and exotic tastes of a great english blend?
Sure I get how you can have favorites and how you could consistently desire one of these over the others. But to actually not like them at all seems baffling and perplexing to me.

The only 2 blends that I absolutely didn’t care for were MacBaren Plumcake & Sleepy Hollow by Strauss Tobacconists. The rest is about preference over dislike for me. I prefer Virginias, VaPers, VaBurs, straight Burleys vs. English/Balkan, Oriental forward & most aromatics. However, I have blends I enjoy in most blend types. ☕

Subjectivity of taste.

Again, subjectivity. Not at all multifaceted to me. Everything from Penzance to Pirate Kake tastes exactly the same to me and leaves the pipe smelling like moldy leather.

I'll add my 2¢. For me, I'm looking for a specific experience when I smoke a pipe. I want to experience the flavor of Tobacco. Any blend that completely obscures the flavor of Tobacco is a complete disappointment. I've tried to revisit the traditional American style aromatics several times over the years and just can't enjoy them. I do really enjoy an aromatic where the topping compliments the flavor profile of the component tobaccos. I'm almost positive I'll never enjoy 1q or sutliff vanilla custard, but I know that could change one day.

Well is there nothing that other people like that you dislike?
I know people who don't like red wine, fish, coffee, beer, red meat, vegetables. I love all of those.
My dad can't stand ice cream or coke. It's alien stuff to him, yet our whole species seems to gulp it in huge amounts.
I don't like latakia. I did and now I don't. It happened overnight and I don't know why.
Oh and KFC. I'd rather eat my grandmother who died in '85 than anything from KFC.

Humans, my friend. They are a finicky lot. Very quick to dismiss an entire category of something, just because of one bad experience, a tendency that extends far beyond mere pipe tobacco blends. I myself am an absolute beginner at this whole thing, but above all else, I am appreciative of the fact that trying many different blends over the past two years has taught me one thing: patience.

How can you not enjoy the comforts of a good burly?
Because it burns my tongue.

How can you not marvel at the multifaceted and exotic tastes of a great english blend?
Multifaceted my arse: those blends are completely unidimensional: hence I prefer something else.

Va blends how can you not enjoy the subtle sweet invigorating smoke?
Sweet? You're kidding, right? Since when has CITRUSey grass been sweet?

How can you not find aros delicious?
I do. All the time.

Seriously vanilla or fruit taste great and when combined with tobacco wonderful.
Now you're talking. And don't forget the glorious room/car note. :-9

I like almost all tobacco. I really can't get into Burley though. When I order more tobacco in March I am going to try a few Burley blends to make my final decision on them.
For burley I turn to WCC Flake 558 (va/bur) or DCC. SWR and Granger are good classic blends. I haven't tried burley from LJ Peretti but they get good reviews and have a wide selection if you're looking for different flavors.

Nailed it ☝️
It is indeed a specific experience sought. I’ve found it and I want to repeat it again and again. No need to look elsewhere.

Except that last part about tastes changing. I wont suddenly enjoy aromatics in the future just as I wont add pumpkin cinnamon hazelnut vanilla artificial anything to my coffee.
