Is anyone aware of a picture or chart that shows the equivalent blends across multiple brands of tobacco?
This would probably apply to non aromatics mostly.
For example, it would show Dunhill Nightcap and then show that GL Pease Quiet Nights is similar and then Sutliffs equivalent blend would be shown.
It seems that most blenders do make formulas that approximate a famous blend from another brand, so this would be useful to reference for newbies.
And if it doesn’t exist, would anyone be interested in starting a project to make one?

Hmmm. Interesting idea, but it might generate some squabbling from blenders. Similar ingredients don't often mean similar proportions, sources, nor processing. Even intentional matches often don't match so much. I think that's why people don't formalize, print, and/or publish such charts. Talk to your legal department (just kidding).

I like this idea and have considered making one myself. The only thing is, I try and just shop for what I like. This would have to be more of group effort I think because everybody's tastes are different and there is a huge amount of tobaccos out there. Instead of trying to make a list of "blends across brands," what would probably be more useful as a database would be organizing tobaccos into groups of similarities, which could then be grouped into the next category, etc.
Smokinpipes.com has a "Tobacco Locator" that does this very well. Have you given that a shot yet?

I agree that this is a very interesting idea but you are not going to get companies to "tell all". What makes a Coke taste similar to a Pepsi, neither will tell. Competition being what it is, it would be interesting to see a general "family" chart so you can see generally similar blends.

Trout you are spot on. There would be no loss of interest to categorize by family instead.
For example if I am looking for a Balkan blend and don’t care about the manufacturer, show me all the options that exist.
I’d be glad to get something started on a shared web spreadsheet. Anyone interested in contributing?

A chart would have to be an ongoing project to update and eliminate discontinued blends and modify changed blends. The best way to do this without a chart is to regularly refer to tobacco pages of online retailers. They are promoting the product but are pretty good about getting the constituent tobaccos, condiments and base leaf, and any flavorings correct, though flavorings are not always revealed, and proportions on anything, never.
