I prefer matches. Swan Vesta matches from the UK are great, but expensive. I used to get them at the Tobacco Supermarket in Atlanta, but I haven't tried that outlet in years now.
I also use the Diamond greenies, but also the HY-Top from local grocer. Both about the same. Your local Ace Hardware carries some strike anywhere wooden matches as well. Forgot the name.
I don't like using lighters. Just something about a wooden match that I like.
And, I'm also with Sable. I just toss the wooden matches when I'm outside. They will rot and become part of the Earth again. My way of giving back.

When I'm home I mainly use matches. I use also Diamond matches or the ones they give you at CIgars International. What I really miss are Ohio Bluetip strike anywhere matches, can't seem to find them in my area.

I used to use Swan Vestas sulphur free smokers matches. The "extra long" variety. But, I just couldn't justify the expense since I didn't note any difference in taste/enjoyment between the Swans, Diamond matches, or a lighter. So I've just stuck to my old zippo pipe lighter for the last several years...or occasionally a Bic if I've forgotten my zippo at home.

Yeh, I find lighters overheat the tobacco. One time it actually freaking caught on fire. I kid you not. The tobacco actually started burning and smoking. How can the tobacco get hotter than that? You're not making an omelette that ruins if you overheat it. You are literally trying to set it on fire.

I do not understand. Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't taste nor do I understand how it could taste different.
That said, I do like matches. It looks cool, antiquated, like a cowboy... Other than that, any other justification would just be me embarrassed about wanting to look cool. But Bics are just way easier, especially in the car or outside, or most of the time really.

Aesthetically, I prefer matches.
But for practical purposes I usually use a lighter.

I buy kitchen matches at the grocery store in bricks. 3 boxes of 250 ea (750 matches total) for about $2. I use them for charring and then lighting when at home and when in the truck. Relights I use a bic when driving or piddling around the house, a match when sitting in my easy chair. When smoking outside I use a bic.
That being said, I don't really notice a difference in taste. I like the matches because a 750 count brick of them lasts a very long time and costs about the same as 1 bic lighter. I got sick of buying a new bic every few days. Using matches lighting when possible extends the life of my bic lighters.

It comes up again and again that strike anywhere matches are illegal. But, when I walk into any store here, there are always a ton of strike anywhere options. I can even buy them via Amazon.com still. I just did a web search and strike anywhere matches are alive and kickin'. I'm not sure if these folks know something that I don't, but this dumb old pipe smoker has a cabinet full of small medium and long (for the grill) strike anywheres. I bought a bunch when I iead on this forum that they were going to be illegal (or something like that). I'm still waiting on them to get removed from the grocery store... waiting and waitin'.

Never met a match that did not impart a sulpher taste to my tobacco - some for just a few puffs, others, longer.
Give me a lighter or give me death! (well, not really, but it sounded emphatic)

A vintage Krueger and Toll, once the initial light has burned off, will lend a pleasant old growth Swedish fir aroma to the process, and a slight smoky signature to the first few puffs, I imagine.

I mostly use a plain old zippo which isn't very refined. Occasionally I use wooden matches but haven't noticed an effect on the taste.

Harris: Sorry about the Swanns. The bastids need to go broke!
I let the match burn to what I call the old prof mark: My philosopher professor in college smoked a pipe. He lit the thing with a match, but there was so much ceremony between the striking and the puffing.
The dumbest of us sat in the back of the classroom and took bets on when the fire would burn the prof's fingers. Just at the last possible moment, he would puff, puff, puff, and blow out the match!
So, I learned to let the sulfur burn off down to the fingers. Then light up.
Harris, I hope this helps!
