Ha, good question! I remember as a kid paper book matches were free in just about every store you walked into. I still remember them at the register.
Almost every cigarette machine had a book or two sitting in the tray.
Seldom seen at best.
I’ve collected them from all over the world for 40 years and they seem rare these days.

Almost every MRE still has a pack of matches.
Why? Who knows.
You dont need them to heat the food. The MREs no longer have cigarettes.
And building a fire is a HUGE no go....ever.

My dad has always collected match books from places hes been. Here are a few from the 1950s-1970s I have here for some reason. Dad has hundreds.
I bought a pair of DBL cigars a few weeks ago at my local shop and they gave me a box of long stem DBL branded matches.
I read the title and thought it was going to be about Matches 860, John Harden.
At one time the Pipe Nook was sending them out with their orders.

That’s what I’m talking about: pipe and cigar branded wooden matches!
The last complimentaries I got, couple of years ago.
Cigars International and Boswells still provide a small matchbox.
Boswells did last week when I was there; and many legit Italian restaurants still do for some reason.
I hate those illegitimate Italian restaurants.
The only time I see matches anywhere is the local cigar / tobacco shops. I can't recall the last time I saw a book of matches sitting on a counter of a business.
Some still do. I even was sent a free lighter with a purchase.
