It's interesting that few drivers seem to look at weather reports before driving. Pilots and ship and river captains always track the weather. Driving is one of the most dangerous activities many people do.
In fact, I think that many of us feel that worrying about the weather related to driving is somehow a shameful timidity. People take pride in driving in heavy snow, and when it starts to rain, it appears many people don't adjust their speed or even increase it.
I believe when people turn on their windshield wipers and lights, acknowledging the weather is changing, they often speed up. Rain increases stopping distance significantly.
Not only do young people get their drivers licenses later than they used to, suggesting they have less driving experience, but drivers education has been eliminated from many high schools as a cost savings.
To practice what I preach, I'm taking an AARP driving refresher course later this month. I hope to pick up some pointers on changes in the laws and other updates, but it is also like going to church. You've heard it all before, but some motivational energy always helps.
