Mason Jars With a Latch

Are jars like these with a latch any good for storing tobacco? For the record I only jar the blends Im smoking, which is at the time like 10 jars? Maybe more? I heard from some people they are good, from others only good for short term (idk what that means) lol.

Personally I like the standard ones. I can replace the lids any time easily. These types you show seem to me to loose sealing power over time from the gasket wearing out and they are hard to open for my hands. But that's just my opinion. Try it and see if you like them. They do seal well when new.

Just replace the rubber rings if or when they wear out
Should work fine as long as you are not intending to age them for >10 years

I use them for things like peppercorns etc. They work for me, no problems after some years. I just bought another one for tobacco because there were no plain, without concern.

That's a bail jar. The tobacco will dry out fairly quickly in them.

Problem I see, possible problem, is the pressure on the lid is not even across the top. Hinge on one side, latch on the other with a rubber gasket. Just the right thickness of the rubber gasket might help. But I still think regular mason jar is the way to go.

Tobacco can be like a drink with ice. The moisture can dilute the flavor just as melting ice can do the drink.

I've used a few of these over the years with mixed results. A couple of them held just as good as anything else, but it's hit and miss. If you get one with a good seal it'll work, but there's really no substitute for a regular screw top jar.

These don’t work for me. I had a blend in one of these and it dried out fairly quickly.

I’ve never had much luck with those. I wouldn’t use them for storage beyond a few months.

I used those, good for a short run, after five years all my tobacco in those has completely dried, fortunately it’s stuff I don’t care too much about. They‘re OK for what you want though. Screw top mason jars are best, but those look like they’d be good.

Admittedly, I've not stored any tobacco in them for longer than 2 years yet, and I'm using a decent type too. I believe they're made in Italy and called Bormioli Fido. Perhaps they're designed for doggy treats.. .
Anyway, I'm not able to get the screw type ones here, without ordering on-line.

Eh, I have several of these and have had tobacco in them for several years, and they have yet to dry out. If you do use them, I think you'll be fine. I like the look of bale top jars, but I think I prefer just regular canning jars for long term cellaring.

Tobacco wont dry quickly but its not ideal storage for years. Many months yes. I use them for keeping and using open blends. No problem.

I agree with the general consensus. I tried these and at least some of my tobacco was dust within a year.

Most people use old seals that are dry. But yes, if you are cellaring they are not the solution. I have about a dozen open blends stored in them as I use them. Zero problems over 6 to eight months.

If they are old jars take some pliers and adjust the tension. They can get weak.

For the cellar get mylar or screw tops.
