The smallest I've used are 1/2 pint. I'm not sure I've seen smaller ones than that. The way I pack them, you can get two 50g tins into one jar.

What the...? My 1/2 pints don't look a thing like that! That thing looks like it was made for a 50g tin.

I can get them at walmart or other big box stores. You can also get them online.

The half pint jars I bought only seem to hold about an ounce. Of course, I'm just gravity filling them. I haven't tried packing at all. Should I be "tamping" them down for lack of a better word.

My understanding of it is if your goal is to age, you dont want to pack it in too firm. There should be some air to aid in the aging process. If it's simply for storing until you can smoke it all, a firmer pack wont hurt.

You have two different types of aging going on in the jar. You have aerobic and anaerobic. You first use up all the oxygen in the container then it switches to a different type of aging. So pack it as tight as you would like.

Those squat jars look perfect! The grocery store by work didn't have that size in so I'll have to find elsewhere. I hate going to Walmart but if I hafta....

I bought my (non-squat) from Target because I, also, hate going to Wal-Mart and then I found the same thing at Publix for a buck cheaper. So if you're lucky enough to live near a Publix, try them

I use the tall narrow 250mL mason jars (same as the 1/2 pint for our american friends) but those squat ones with the larger openings look like they would be handy! I have to decant a bit of tobacco into a secondary container for packing purposes; the mouth on the tall jars is too narrow, or I am too cumbersome, to pack a bowl without getting loose bits of tobacco all over. It looks like the larger mouth may remedy that!

I don't understand why these awesome squat jars are three times the price of the normal quart jars; less glass needed. Right?

Yes I usually can fill the pipe in the jar or just over it so the tobacco stays in the jar or pipe.

I use the wide mouth 8 0z. jars for holding a tin (50g) and pack it down tightly. No matter how hard it's tamped down will have no affect on the tobacco. After all, look how tightly packed it is in a tin. As for aging any tobacco just leave it in the tin as why would you open the tin in the first place if that's your objective.
