I went today to get after a couple of months an SG ST James plug from an 4 oz major jar and I noticed it was definitely drier from the last time. I looked at the Jar and there was a small rusted spot on the bottom of the lid and after cleaning it I saw a small hole. This was unexpected also because I am in Southern California which is pretty dry. No big deal as actually the plug was dry at the right point to be smoked. Also I keep the bulk of the cellar in mylar bags for long storage. Just wondering if anyone else had this issue.

The first question is how old is this jar storage setup? I’d assume everything will eventually rust. I have mostly dollar store knockoffs, and just under 5 yrs everything I’ve checked is ok, and we have a humid summer, dry winter. It woulndt surprise me if the good Italian jars are Chinese made too these days, but maybe not.

Edit;
i re-read the couple of months. Is it a couple months old only? Or just left a couple of months, but older? If it is only a couple months old, that is a defective product for sure, like I said my dollar store jars last years.

The jar is about 4 yo and last time I opened it was a couple of months ago. The rust developed from the bottom part of the lid, the one facing inside the jar and as a matter of fact I could not see anything from the outside of the jar.
Thinking maybe being St James plug a very humid one maybe it developed too much humidity inside the jar. So maybe it was not an issue with the jar but with the plug and its associated humidity which is what I am more interested to find out.

For what it's worth, I live in AZ, the driest state, and I recently opened a brand new package of Ball jars and the rings were all rusted.
They look to be having quality control issues of late. Found (by slicing my finger when cleaning it) a shard of molten glass jutting up from the bottom of a new ball jar. Will never blindly trust a jar again. To thier credit they sent me a check for the whole case. I mailed them the jar, so hopefully they will get that figured out. Have also had rusty rings from an unopened/new box.

Attempting to actually can and seal food required new seals every time. I guess you can try but you may as roll the dice on killing youself with foodborn poisions!

I NEVER re-use lids in anything I can. One scratch, and they're worthless. And, I have never seen a lid rust when I've used a fresh lid. You can buy them in bulk, 500 for like $20ish.
Same here. I’ll reuse a jar and ring but always pitch the old lid. Kids are so cheap it’s a nobrainer.

Edit: kids are cheap? Yeah that’s a lie! Lids. Lids was what I was after here.

It's simple. One of the strands of tobacco caught under the lid, and the moisture from tobacco caused the rust. A good a story as ever.

Yeah this would be my guess too. I immediately migrate opened tins to mason jars to keep them nice for long periods of time, and I've had quite a few of them develop rust spots over time due to bits of tobacco getting stuck in the lid.
