All, thank you for the kind comments. I just wanted people to know about my friend.
As for the one who is unable to quench his desire to say something controversial, I would admonish the rest of the group, in the words of my best friend of my youth's mother "don't pay him no mind". If he chooses to go low he may do so, but don't let him sully Marty's memory by acknowledging him. There is a time and a place to discuss the politics of it all, but it isn't here.

I am sorry for your loss. Another reminder to let my friends and family know that I love and appreciate them every chance I get.
Peter, not the time for comments like that. I am sure you are a better man than that.

Dread, what an awful event and turn for you and your friend's family. Our veterans never stop giving, never stop loving this nation.
I am so sorry for your and your friend's family and the loss of such a leader. This is truly tragic.

Dread, I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincerest condolences.
You are bigger man than I, your response to that comment shows you have a ton of class.

Sorry to hear that dread. You have my sincerest condolences buddy. Godspeed Marty.
Edit: After going back and reading some of the comments to understand what Harris meant in his post, I really wish I hadn't. Out of respect for Marty and dread, I refrain from further comment.

My sincere sympathies dread...very sorry to hear this. One of my first thoughts upon reading your OP was, what are the odds? Makes one stop and consider the ripple effect throughout society from violence...the “7 degrees of separation” thing. I don’t think any of us realize the degree to which everyone is affected, to one extent or another, when anyone’s life is ended prematurely by such evil acts. Accidents are one thing, but every time the natural flow of life is interrupted by intentional evil, everyone and everything is altered.

sorry for your loss, Dread. Remember the good times you shared. Perhaps put down the pipe and switch it out for a cigar in his honor.
