I've already got one of my dream cars in a Pontiac G8 GT. It's just sitting the garage now that I am not in the same country but it's a thrill every time I go home.

Actually this is my dream car, a Maybach, of course I need a driver. I would get a 5000.00 a night escort to drive me.

If I suddenly had the means the first place I would visit is the Aston Martin dealership. I have always wanted one.

You Americans. Why not get a proper modern car instead of the rubbish they make now. Something like an Audi, Mercedes or BMW. I probably sound like I'm anti-American but I'm not. America made wonderful cars until the end of the 1950s, and they were part of what made America great. But now American cars are rubbish - all of them. It's really a shame. Cost cutting and low aspiration. America used to have a great car culture.

Well, I'm always debating as to what car I'd like, but thinking it over, it would have to be THIS Aston Martin DB10. One of the few made for Spectre, and the very one auctioned off (a few days after I took this pic) for almost £3,000,000!

I also got a few pics of me with it, but this one does the car more justice!

I have decided that the new Jaguar SUV with the 6 cylinder 350 hp is the car for me. But the truth is I hardly ever drive, and I don't really need a new car. Might get one anyway. Will wait to see how it is after it has been around a few years. My mother had an old V12 which she promised to give me when she got over 90 years old. She cracked it up when she was in her late 80s and they confiscated her license. Then I had to talk her out of getting a motorized skate board (to go to Bloomingdales).

Jags never get great ratings from Consumer Reports on reliability, whatever that means, but the XK-E with its long hood was my permanent dream car growing up.

The XK-E, My permanent dream car growing up.
That was one of mine too...Then they came out with the V-12 300 horse...Then the '68 Vette with the 427 435 horse...Then the Corvette with the 427 L-88....I could keep going for while.

Not all European cars are as nice as a BMW, Benz, or Audi.
In fact, all 3 of those makes sell more of their low end crappers than the nice high end stuff. Audi sells the heck outta those A4s ... Benz how has the CLA which isn't worthy of carrying the name ... and anything made by BMW that is lower than the 5 series isn't worth owning. In addition, if you own any one of those cars in America, you can expect to pay at least double the cost for maintenance and repairs that you would on a Chevy or a Ford.
Realistically, the Japanese are kicking the butts of both the US and Euro car makers. They make affordable, dependable cars that anyone can afford to own and maintain. Not to mention they last forever.
There's a lot of car makers making many, many models each. There's a lot of car owners with different desires, needs and budgets. Trying to encompass all of that in a forum post would be impossible.
Why paint with such a broad brush? There are a lot of fine automobiles from both sides of the Atlantic. There's a lot of crappy ones from both sides as well. Europe without a doubt has the high end performance car market cornered, with only a couple entries from America and Japan. However, these cars account for maybe .01% of the total automobile market.
What makes a car "rubbish"? Is it simply looks? Comfort? Performance? Price?
I respect your right to believe that all American cars are rubbish. I simply don't agree. I believe that a car which delivers reliability and performs the job it was designed for at a reasonable price is a good car. I don't get hung up on looks or styling, unless that is the job the car is assigned (the job of looking good).
Having worked in the automotive field in multiple roles for my entire adult life, that's my $.02 worth.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Nissan GT-R. That thing is a miracle of engineering, it handles just as well as the Ferrari F50 but carries four and has a proper trunk.
If winter wouldn't totally destroy a vehicle like that I'd have one in a heartbeat, and that over pretty much anything else on the market, at any price.

That's not very Sherlockian!
US cars did get very rubbishy, but that was then, this is now. I do happen to prefer the MB's, but would consider an American vehicle for another, but probably a truck.

I would like a completely refurbished Checker Marathon. As large a small studio apartment on the inside and legendary reliability.
I am in the auto bizz, I don't like cars.

I keep cars for a long time, eight to ten years, not forever but quite a while. And I owned my first car in my late twenties, so I've only had a few. As a kid, I grew up steeped in and loving American cars, and in most instances I have started out intending to buy an American car, not for nationalistic reasons, but because that's what I grew up with. Well, guess what -- American car dealerships have repelled me with remarkable regularity. The Buick dealer wouldn't even take me seriously in discussing purchase of a Skyhawk, so I went up the street where the Nissan dealer willingly went to work selling me a car. Another time an Olds dealer quietly suggested I not by an American car unless I also bought an extended warranty. Another time, when I was interested in a Mercury, the sales staff was too interested in a discussion of their own to even say good morning. Later, a salesman at the Subaru dealer came out to the lot just as they were closing after dark, with brochures in hand. American car salesman don't want to sell American cars, and they despise their customers, at least in my experience. So I have owned one German car, a VW bug, and about six Japanese, all because the folks who sell American won't. Okay. The Germans and the Japanese build pretty good cars. I was born here, look very "white bread," occasionally dress a little casual, but not in a threatening way. Go figure.
