So, I've seen a number of piping items featuring this material. SPC just added one, btw:

Where do carvers source mammoth? Anybody knows? Any carvers here who know?

That —counterfeit— too is a problem. I was thinking more of trying to avoid smugglers from the Russian mafia, but thanks for bringing up another red flat.

Bruce Weaver made a number of mammoth accents, but the ones I have are elephant and hippo.

I know nothing about the excavation from the ice of mammoths. Seems like the remains would be extensively protected, and any gray or black market materials like tusks would be shady items at the outset. I would be suspicious first of the authenticity of any of it, and the legality and ethics even moreso. I'd leave it alone on principal -- not holier than thou, just "let's keep it in the road."

Mammoth can be addictive. MAD is real. I am currently waiting for a mammoth Calabash to match my 1911 custom grips. Alas, I wait ...

On the contrary, so called "ice ivory" is the only legal ivory you can buy. My understanding is that there is fair amount of both mammoth and fossilized walrus tusk for sale in legitimate markets. (Not to suggest that there couldn't be plenty of fake stuff as well).

Just one of many articles about "ice ivory": https://gizmodo.com/demand-for-ivory-has-spawned-a-woolly-mammoth-rush-in-1831491780

Craig, I am “waiting” for a Tom Eltang Mammoth Calabash. But note the quotes around the word waiting. As in he does not do commissions. And his calabash pipes are very rare. I’ve personally seen one of his mammoth pieces and it was stunning. So I wait and keep my eye out. If/when one comes available that would be a grail pipe for me.

There is a lot of pre-embargo Elephant tusk out there. From what I was told by one pipe maker, It is not the easiest material in the world to obtain and the pricing for even small amounts is sky high. If you try to sell any product on eBay and use the word "elephant tusk," or "Ivory," then your listing is red flagged before you can even get it published as that is material not allowed to be sold on their site.
So, sellers, myself included, instead call the material "Mammoth." Example: "John Doe Large Bent Billiard W/ Mammoth Shank Trim."

jpmcwjr, no, my pipe isnt a calabash. It simply has mammoth as an adornment. Sabina is Sabina Santos. She is one of a small handful of pipemakers who have made calabash pipes with mammoth used for the cap.
