p.s I will get back to you about the blend, I have a tin I put away in 2014 but have not opened it yet. I generally find Pease blends will appease though. I highly recommend his Westminster if you decide to keep trying english style blends.

I do intend to keep trying English blends. I'm finding out they give a better smoke. Yesterday I smoked a pipefull of Early Morning in a pipe that always ran a little wet smoking 7 seas. With the Petersons Early Morning it was dry as a bone. Even the Early Morning is starting to taste better with every pipe full.

One of my favourites. I was drawn to the tin art, but the smoke, with that ginger touch, is wonderful too. If you want to go deeper into the Latakia, I would suggest another favourite of mine - Gaslight.
Hi, I bought some Gaslight today. First time a had a tobacco in plug or cake form. I broke it up and rubbed it between my fingers before putting in a jar. It had a great tast in the beginning, then it was hard to keep lit. I might have caused a problem for the tobacco by using a corn cob with a filter . I hate filters, I orderd a none filter stem for the cob. It had a good smell while smoking it but had to keep lighting it. I loosened up a little and it would be ok for a few puffs. I'll try it in one of my none filter pipes tomorrow . Tobacco seemed what I expected but it has to be something I'm doing wrong, maybe packing to tight or something. I'm just use to a ribbon cut. Did I break it up right . Some of the tobacco leaves were big. Your right ,it's a little sweeter to me than the Maltese Falcon blend.Thanks.

I've tried it a couple of times. Each time, I found it had one of the greatest, enticing tin note for an English blend. Each time, it turned out to be unfortunately bland to my palate, when smoking it.
Very disappointing.

Yeah - it was my first cake as well. From what I've been told, you want to make sure you cut it a certain way - against the grain versus with. A bit hard to do though since mine was falling apart a bit when I got it.
It can be a trick keeping it lit. I'm still working on it. Just tried another plug today, (Temple Bar) which stayed lit quite easily compared to it. I think it's just trial and error. Try to keep a bit of kindling for the top, don't tamp too hard, (or it'll plug the pipe pretty easily). I'm working on it as well, (I think I even posted in the group on it,)! That being said, it's a wonderful tasting tobacco. One reviewer said it tasted like creosote - the oil on railroad track wood - like creosote - but in a good way. I couldn't agree more! I'll try to remember to get back to you on my experiments with the packing and the lighting.

Thanks, I went and cut it up with a razor some more. It kinda looks like a burly tobacco now. But when it smoked it was pleasant. I'll also try a pipe with a smaller bowl.

I like Maltese Falcon quite a bit. To me it's a bit musty and the latakia is toned down, but somehow satisfying. Not a go to English like Squadron Leader but I enjoy it as a once in a while smoke.

How is the Squadron leader as far as taste and smell ? The Maltese is smoking better every time. I'm thinking of trying squadron leader.

Squadron Leader is a traditional light English. Latakia forward but not overly strong. Some would consider it a quintessential English blend. It doesn’t have any “aro” like additions like Maltese Falcon (ginger or whatever). Definitely try some when you can get your hands on it.

Hey I am not sure if anyone has suggested this for you yet, but take that filter out of the cob and toss into the closest abyss. The draw you get from the 'filtered stem with no filter' is perfection. You will still need to rub and dry plugs to get them to burn well, but just addressing the pipe end.
