Gawith Brown Flake (scented and unscented) makes beautiful smoke.

Tobacco Reviews offers the following description of its components:

83.5% blended Virginias are combined with a relatively high (for English Blends at any rate) proportion of Malawi burley, 12.5%, to give flavour and depth to the smoke, and the addition of just 4% Malawi dark fired leaf…

Yes, we all know we shouldn’t believe everything we read about blend components on the internet.

But maybe that 12.5% Malawi burley really is the critical reagent for ineffable bliss?

Does anyone know if there’s anything else in the Gawith portfolio with as much (or more) air cured burley as Brown Flake?

You know, I was just wondering about the "Malawi" burley in GH Brown Flake U/S the other day. I tried the flake for the first time and liked it very much, despite normally despising burley. No, I don't like it as much as SG Best Brown, but it's a very satisfying smoke in a somewhat different idiom. After realizing how much I appreciated this tobacco, I looked it up, and lo-and-behold it's 12.5% burley, which should have meant that I hated it -- but I didn't.

Haha! I came about this from other end of “lo-and-behold, it’s 12.5% burley. No wonder I love it!”

From a burley guy to a non-burley guy, I’m glad we’re enjoying this one just the same. Hats off to our friends in Kendal for one more tobacco that defies the common classification.

My feelings towards burley reflects what @SBC noted-I’m not a big fan of most of the usual American burley blends, but smoke and enjoy many Gawith (and other “across the pond” makers) blend that use “empire” burley varieties.

@Mrs. Pickles, If I’m not mistaken in recent years the political climate of Malawi has changed towards reducing tobacco export, and trying to eliminate the child labor sweat and tears that made it so magical.
I’ve no industry connections outside of what I hear here and elsewhere, but I think Brazil and perhaps India are where much is coming from these days.
Other than expected variances from age, my palate can’t tell much of any differences in the brown and black twists from recent purchases to 2016-2020 stock I’ve picked up.

That’s how feel about G&H Best Brown #2.
I have no idea if it’s the same as Brown Flake Unscented but in a tin.

Yeah, I figure there are a lot of out-of-date tobacco descriptions online. I believe Rachel said they don't get much leaf from Africa anymore.
