I smoke some big pipes and small pipes. It’s a mood or use thing.

Here’s the equation I’ve used with great success.

An ocean liner traveling at 18 knots towards the equator intersects with an catamaran averaging 24 knots and one of the crew has to clean the cookware after the celebratory meal. While cleaning the cookware a fair wind starts blowing and the catamaran separates from the ocean liner.

This gives us OL + C = D. When added to the circumference of a Peterson Pub Pipe and subtracted from a cob you get whatever you damn well want.

Enjoy your pipe.

I agree with @K.E. Powell in that eventually every pipe smoker should have a large pipe (and a smaller pipe for stronger blends).

If you don't have a larger clay pipe, then this one may be what the Clay King needs to have a diverse pipe selection at a reasonable price:

@The Amish Tyrant Definitely a King Size clay for the Clay King!

So I’ve got it in my head that I need a large pipe. I'm primarily a clencher and someone who smokes on the go but I’m thinking a hefty pipe that feels weighty in the hand would be good as a house pipe.

The largest bowl I’ve smoked is a BriarWorks Oom Paul which is about 0.97 cu in. I’m thinking about getting a pipe made that would be 1.57 cu in which is over 60% larger. Another option is to buy a factory pipe that I’ve been eyeing that’s in between these two at 1.17 cu in, 20% larger than the Oom Paul.

Do you guys think I should go start with the smaller of the two to see if I actually like pipes that are that big or should I just make the jump to the big boy right away?
Buy both ...

The Savinelli 316 EX has a giant bowl but is actually quite light and clenchable I use it for Englishes to get all those flavors going I prefer it to the 320 in form and function and one can be got relatively cheaply.

My largest bowled pipe is also an oom Paul. My Rossi sera. Still probably smaller to most. But I think with that shape, it doesn't matter how big or heavy they are. An oom Paul should hang effortlessly anyways. It's quickly become on of my favorite shapes.

I think small, medium, and large pipes serve a purpose. How long do I want to smoke? 2 hours? Half hour? I don’t like packing half bowls and I like to finish a bowl. Also, wide bowls are are supposed to be better for complex blends, but I have yet to notice this.

Same here. I've picked up 6 of them in the last year. I think that means I have a problem....

I buy pipes because I'm drawn to that pipe. I don't give much thought to the size of the pipe. I have small pipes, large pipes, and a few enormous pipes and I smoke em all. My small pipes are for short smokes & flakes, large pipes are for sitting back and enjoying a long smoke, enormous pipes are for clubbing Esoterica bandits. Don't limit yourself to certain sizes, shapes, or brands. Your tastes will change, everyone's do.

Yeah fair enough! I did the math to measure volume so it might be easier to compare but it is pretty unconventional. Here are the dimensions of the chambers:

BriarWorks:
  • Chamber Depth: 1.89 in./48.01 mm.
  • Chamber Diameter: 0.81 in./20.57 mm.
Billiard:
  • Chamber Depth: 1.84 in./46.74 mm.
  • Chamber Diameter: 0.90 in./22.86 mm.
Dream Pipe:
  • Chamber Depth: 2.00 in.
  • Chamber Diameter: 1.00 in.
This is how I measure, it is the only way that makes sense for my purposes. As long as it’s not really wide or really tall with the other dimension being unusually small it seems like a reasonable method to me.

For U-shaped chambers I just take the average width to calculate my volume.

Best to try and then you'll know. But often, like blends themselves that aren't your thing on first try - pipes can be the same way. I find that different environments (air temp, flow, humidity, etc) often affects how a certain pipe smokes, like blends themselves. I think if you get the larger pipe you'll have rewards from it at some point; even if not immediately.

I think this makes a lot of sense!

I decided to buy the factory pipe since it was only $45 and see how I like it. I figure I can always get a commission made later on if I like it.

Thanks for the thoughts, all! I’ll post a photo of the pipe when it comes in.
