George, ok a couple of questons. The original stem had sort of a tenon, was the mortise drilled to receive it? Seeing how you proceeded, I assume the answer is no. Also, "boogered up", is that a technical term?

Yeah, that little step down extension-tube-thingy was just an affectation. The overall length staying the same is all that matters.

Definitely. I had a drill instructor who made me understand---in exhaustive detail---the precise nature of the term over the course of one memorably hot afternoon, in fact. :lol:
