You have heard of PAD, you have heard of TAD, but have your heard of MSAD (Magnetic Stand Acquisition Disorder)? I've had it for years. I gave up trying to make my own, as noted above, I have tried all the methods, it was too much work and I could never get the magnets to work the way I wanted. Thus began my relationship with Neal Yarm. He has honed the technique perfectly. I have slowly added the custom wall pieces into a set for my Castello collection and have never had trouble with a pipe falling off, a few are even over 100 grams easily and they stay in place. These magnets are strong! Whatever he uses is top quality and he always places the base metal plate under felt to protect the pipe.

I would guess that the base metal plate is probably a neo magnet of some sort. My knife holder has hidden neo plate magnets in it which are pretty strong, and felt pads for the pipes to sit on, and 1/2" neo N48 spheres in the bowls are just enough do the job for some pipes. Installing cylinder magnets into an existing base might be fairly easy, especially with a drill press.
Here's my knife-stand with what is on it today. I should have bought another one or two of those things.

I've been getting ready to go through some familiar and some new VAs soon, here is most of the smoking line-up that I set up yesterday. I had some different pipes set up on it over the winter, and the felt pads haven't quite molded to the different pipes yet, but I could get them to sit how I wanted for the most part. The second pipe looks mis-aligned in the pic, but it is lined up pretty well when I look at it. The two on the right have not been smoked yet. There are a couple others that I'll be using to go through the VAs, and a couple others for Lats, and they all just sit in front of the stand (two are sitters), or in my regular single and double stand, unless they happen to get rotated to the magnetic stand for whatever reason.

1/2" N42s might be a little light.
It's what I'm using and it works just fine. I can position the pipe any way that I need and it stays put. YMMV. More pull is also fine. Guys here can get a general idea where to start.
Those Yarm displays are gorgeous! Maybe if I win the lottery...

Sounds good, mainly pointing out that the numbers after the N signifies the strength. I have a couple pipes where N42s would probably be fine, but I have a couple where the N48s seem a little light. N52 seems to be the upper limit that I have found for spheres in 1/4" to 1/2" sizes on ebay.
