Something's wrong here. The stem material Dunhill used was top-drawer stuff. No inclusions or voids, no graininess, and slow to oxidize. I've never known a exception.

Gonna guess what's on your pipe is a replacement made from a low quality molded blank. (Probably Greek by the sound of it)

A close-up pic of the of the button, both an oblique view and end-on so the slot can be seen, should settle the question.
serious curiosity. Is it even slightly possible that it's an original but was abused or mistreated to such a degree that it could end up like that. I mean possible at all. Like if the pipe was smoked on the moon because it belonged to Neil Diamond (I know that's the wrong one). Just curious.

I think we have done all we can here.
Well, there was the question about buffing out, and keeping off, very stubborn chatter but I can see how something other than that seems more interesting. I knew if I put the link to the pictures up where the thread would go.

You can ask VKpipes. This comes from them. They’re located in the Ukraine. I’m surprised so many things from another century survive at all and it amazes me when they’re in good shape. This mouthpiece looks good aesthetically. But as I said, I’m a novice and a dolt. Is it possible the original was mistreated? Why not? The issue with the tenon is bizarre but it doesn’t bother me. I quite like the pipe. I’d just like to keep the mouthpiece in better shape now. I’m in Japan. I have to order obsidian from the U.S.
