I have a upcoming trip to Madrid, Spain. I have found a good few cigar shops as alongside pipe smoking I'm a avid cigar smoker. Despite this, so far I have been unable to find any pipe shops. Does anyone have any recommendations or am I limited to the pipe tobacco and pipes sold within the cigar stores, I know for the other parts of Spain I have visited this is the case. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I have visited Madrid, every year or two, for the last twenty five years, as well as various other parts of Spain, and I have never seen a shop devoted to pipes/pipe tobaccos. The closest I've ever come is a shop down in Alicante--a regular government "tabacos" shop that happened to have a fair selection of pipes and an okay selection of pipe tobacco, but nothing like what's probably available to you on line.

What you will see everywhere in Madrid and elsewhere are the usual "Tabacos" shops. Many of these will have a few hardwood pipes--the "Raw" brand seems popular--most of which, I suspect, are sold to people smoking something other than tobacco. As for pipe tobacco, you will usually find a few over the counter brands. The selection is about what you'd see in the duty free shops, or less.

That said, there are a kajillion "tabacos" shops in Madrid. Every barrio seems to have one, and I suspect at least a few of them may cater more to the pipe smoker. I hope someone here knows of some, as it will help me out too on my next trip.

In Spain , tobacco is a monopoly from the state. So you can only find it on estancos. The number of tobaccoes that you can find is limited. However , if you want to try something not available in USA you can try Caporal . If you like strong dark tobacco you may like it. If you ever tasted Gitanes or Gauloises cigarettes then you have an idea but this one as pipe tobacco. Caporal is also cheaper than most tobaccoes.

I find just popping into any of the little tabacos pays off. I found some of the Dunhill blends after they moved to the Peterson name in Spain, including the ones no longer produced (Durbar and Aperitif were the ones I found). But actually, I ended up smoking a lot of cigars as they were pretty cheap. The flea market in Madrid is excellent (only on certain days, I can't remember which) - I have found pipes before, including a Peterson Standard System for 3 euros.

Madrid is one of my favourite cities in the world (if not my favourite). The city is lovely, the people are really friendly, and the food is incredible. Enjoy it!

Next time I'm in Madrid, I'm going to El Rastro hunting for pipes!

Yes Caporal Export and Superior * are those French domestic Tabac Gris *blends so to say very similar to Toscano fire-cured burley tobacco, the taste of those is quite a much reminiscent of Tabac de Semois Belge

In principle you should go to Moreu. Since it is 50 meters from Puerta del Sol, you will surely be there at some point. It is a pipe shop. R. Moreu Fumador y Regalo - Buscar con Google - https://g.co/kgs/hMEvay. The Piegui 432 is very well stocked. Estanco Piegui Nº 432 - Buscar con Google - https://g.co/kgs/VYz8Cq. The Cava de Magallanes is also very good. Cigar Shop Magallanes Estanco Habanos Official Madrid, Spain - Buscar con Google - https://g.co/kgs/Y6euxB

I think there is what is called the second channel, which is not part of the monopoly, but tobacco is more expensive there.

I didn't know it was a state monopoly. I know it's illegal to order it online, so I'm not surprised. I've a few Spaniards say they stock up on overseas vacations or have a PO box in France, Andorra, or Tangier if they live close enough to one.

I had to download the list of the Spanish state and remove the tobaccos for hookah, because the list is more than 4000 different blends.
But these are the pipe tobaccos that are sold in Spain.

Anyone who lives in Spain knows that that list is unreal. It is an official list but you would not be able to find most of the tobaccoes listed.

Wow I don't even recognize half of these and there's a whole bunch I would've expected to see but don't. My state had a monopoly on liquor sales up until maybe ten years ago but the individual stores could sell whatever items they wanted. Had no idea there were so many hookah blends, that's nuts
