Good morning,
This morning I was cleaning and polishing a couple pipes; one of them, a billiard shape with a sterling silver band that
I purchased in the early 1960's in Portland OR at a shop called "Arthur Leonard's". Here's the engraving on the bottom of the shank:
Leonard's
Deluxe Sandblast
London, England
1451
Can anyone kindly help me discover what company might have manufactured this pipe?

GBD made a Prestige 1451 that has a similiar shape.

The shop may have had GBD make them and stamp with their name

The script looks similiar to a Prestige also

It might be a factory second becuase it has a sand blast but I cant say

Arthur Leonard's was a great shop during its existence, along the lines of Drucquer's and Smoker's Haven. I have a Comoy's London Pride 129 Extraordinaire stamped Leonard (arched) over Portland and it's a great pipe. I think Leonard's worked closely with its suppliers and probably had some private label stock made by such as Comoy's and GBD. GBD did make a 1451 shape, although it was a saddle, rather than a taper, stem, and doesn't really look much like your pipe to my eye. You can check the shapes out on the GBD Pipedia page. I can't really tell if your pipe is an oval or round shank...if the later than Charatan might also be a possibility.

The stummels look similiar to me. Its hard to compare the oval vs round issue with photos provided. The OP looks to have an oval stem but a lot there is left to the imagination.

Yeah, looking at it again (especially the second photo) it probably is an oval shank. The number 1451 puts it squarely in GBD territory (neither Comoy nor Charatan made numbers even close to that). I assume the pipe was a basket or board quality pipe, bought by the gross, and the shaping wouldn't necessarily have to conform to strict standards; i.e. the maker would use saddle OR taper stems, the shank might be shorter than the usual grade GBD, etc. Your pick of GBD-make is most likely the one.
