102... Nice run!!!

MAD.jpg

When I was a kid, I used to memorize the gag-lines from Al's 'Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions' ... When my Dad would get so incensed over something I'd be doing, and repeatedly he would get tricked into yelling at me: "Do you want to go to your room?!?!?", to which, I would just HAVE to respond: "...What and miss-out on being yelled at by you!". Dad would grow red in the face, and walk-away shaking his head, realizing he'd fallen into another Al Jaffee script AGAIN. There was some other classic line which I have long since forgotten the response-line to, for when Dad would be driving the station wagon down the highway and turn his head back at us kids in the rear, and yell: Do you kids want me to stop this car?!?!; to which the 'Snappy Answer' was something like: Only if you are going to get out and walk, so Mom can drive us home.

That one didn't always work out so well 'in the end'.

Thanks for the laughs and memories Al. - Sherm Natman

It's a well kept secret that Cheech and Chong's Earache My Eye was actually based on a recording Sherm had made of one of his "episodes" with his poor nerve shattered Dad.

I have a funny story about MAD magazine. When I was a kid I looked up to my big brother (RIP) a lot and pretty much took everything he said as gospel. He was really into MAD Magazine. One time I had a friend over and we were in my brother's room (weren't supposed to be). When he came home he bursts into his room to see me and my friend at his desk, listening to his records, and me with my feet propped up reading a MAD Magazine.
Bro says to me, "You can't read that!"
I said to him, "Why not?"
He said, "Because that's only for smart people!"
Me: "Ah, shit..." and I tossed the magazine across the room.

I grew up in the 80s and was introduced to Mad by my dad. The local library had a subscription and several years of back issues. I collected a bunch of readers' copies from the 60s-90s and just passed them on to my 9-year-old, who loves them.

Whenever I got a new or new-to-me issue, I'd first check the cover to see what predicament old Alfred was in, and then my next stop was always the fold-in. Of all of the excellent artists and writers mad employed, Jaffee was one of the top. RIP.

R. I. P. Mr. Jaffee. But a question does beg to be asked: Was he a pipe smoker too? Looks like a pipe would have suited him well.

Those tri-fold-back covers were the best, Mad and Electric Company magazines were always read from back to front Mad for the reason just mentioned, and EC for Spiderman.
Thanks for all the great Memories RIP

RIP
Never has the world needed Mad Magazine (and National Lampoon) exposing the ridiculousness of the establishment more.

Fully agreed! I got a digital copy of National Lampoon and other than some very bad alignment when they were scanning, it's a treasure trove from when entertainment critiqued propaganda, not parroted it.
