I have only tried the one blend. 7 seas cherry and it was horrible. It tasted bland and reminded me of old cigarettes and the bite was worse than any tobacco i have ever tried.
It really put me off trying any of the other blends, would you chaps say the cherry is just a one off bad blend? or am i probably best avoiding the others?
I understand it is all subjective but you guys really know your stuff.
I swore off Mac Baren after a couple of bad experiences with tongue bite. Roll Cake was particularly bad from memory, but I was a newer pipe smoker back then. It is probably time I give them another try... I have a tin or two of Plumcake in my cellar & just picked up a couple tins of Old Dark Fired.
Everyone's taste is different, so you might not like my recommendations. I enjoy Macbarens Navy Flake, Virginia #1, Mature Virginia, Plumcake, Golden, Vanilla, Symphony, Highlander, Acadian Perique, Chocolate Honey and Scottish.
MacBaren is certainly one of the best values out there for a quality tinned blend, if you like their offerings... I've been tempted to try a few but so far nothing has really caught my eye.
HH Acadian Perique and HH Syrian Latakia are probably highest on my wishlist, and I do indeed have a curiosity about the 7 Seas line but first I'd rather try Lane 1Q or RLP-6...
rothnh, I don't care much for the basic Virginia cigarettes in Canada but I sure love the rich taste of a quality Virginia blend! I don't pay much attention to room note so I haven't personally made the cigarette-like connection.
Actually, I love the 7 Seas Red Blend. The wild cherry flavoring is a good twist on the world of cherry flavored tobaccos. I thought the casing was done just right and the tobacco flavors were allowed to come to the forefront from time to time just right. For me it burns nice and evenly, fairly cool and doesn't bite at all. Still don't know where the "famous Mac Baren bite" comes from, as I've never been bitten by any Mac Baren blends.
Hmm. I was quite new to pipe smoking when i tried it. (i still am new) I guess it is down to my packing and smoking skills rather than the tobacco.
I have noticed flavor changes in some of my regular blends as i have experimented more with packing and smoking techniques.
I think i will have to try again.
It is these things that make me love this hobby so :D
